Cortez Trouble

Just got a Cortez and I am not a new Metal detector user. My Cortez was getting the same or less depth than my old Golden Saber II. It was not IDing targets any more than 4-5 inches therefore the Notch was not working correctly and it was very Chatty. I had it set on 1200 oclock Threshold and about 7 Sensativity. Hunted this way and my 15 year old Son kicked my rear with my old Saber finding two rings, 2 Nickles, and two coins to my one hunting the same area. He also dug a lot less trash.

I was just about to give up and send it back. I got home and I tried setting the Threshold to just at null and set the Sensativity almost full setting way in the red zone. Doing Air tests this seemed to make it do much better. Does this make any sense at all?

On any of my detectors with a threshold, the instructions are to run it at a just audible level. Usually I can do this and run full to near full sensitivity. In some locations I have to back off the sensitivity a bit due to ground chatter or other interference. Your discrimination setting and/or the notch may have an effect on your depth as well. I have both the DeLeon and the Cortez and in most soils get good depth with the sensitivity at around 8.

Found over $5.00 in change today along with 3 rings. Apparently the Cortez is working good now.
