Cortez does the Impossible

I was asked about three months ago to try and find a Ring for a guy that works at a local Convience store. He showed me where he lost it which was in grassy area near where they have the Air Hose and near where the Dumpster used to be. This area was covered with Pop Tops and Square Tabs. He described the Ring as a Mans Titanium Ring with a Solitary Diamond. It was his Wedding Ring and he had looked for it extensively and could not find it after slinging some Bleach off his hands.

Looking at the area my best hope was to get a similiar ring and tune my Golden Saber to it while rejecting everything else. Golden Saber has an accept or Reject Notch. He was unable to find anything similiar.

I talked to him today at Lunch and promised I would try to find the Ring.

I used my Cortez because there was targets everywhere and I could not dig them all. I was unsure where the Ring would hit in the TID or the Size. The third target I decided to dig hit as a Nickle but it had a TID of about 55. This was unusual because this is the line on my Machine between a Square Tab and a really corroded Zinc Penny. It said it was Nickle Size so this was curious.

I was really careful and dug up his Ring.

I just could not believe the Cortez picked this Ring out of all that Junk with the Stock coil. I would have took a picture but the Guy was off and running to show his Wife.

Ring was valued at $600.00 and I found at least $2.00 in Clad after finding the Ring. This was the Fourth Ring the Cortez has found this Month and I don't hunt Rings.

I ordered a 5.75 Coil for it and found that it was not acting right with the new Coil. A call to Tesoro revealed I wasted my money. Tesoro says that each coil needs to be tuned to the Detector to really work well. This means I would have to hunt exclusively with one or the other. I am having too good luck to abandon the Stock Coil on this Detector.

Thanks for Reading

Yet another Tesoro success story. Great job daddyflea finding that ring in an almost impossible situation. Congrats!

That is great news indeed! You made him a happy camper with the cortez !

Tesoro, the little detector that can.

Nice job finding the ring.

Daddyflea, I have heard the same thing about the coils.

I believe they also say the only time you can switch out the coils without sending the unit in for resetting is if you are using a unit with manual ground balance.

Maybe someone else can confirm that.

Not quite correct. On the TID machines the TID is connected to the Ground Balance so, while technically you can use the Coil if the Ground Balance is correct, the TID would have to be adjusted as well to be correct. This is why the Cortez has Manual Ground Balance in all metal mode but fixed Ground Balance in Discrimination mode.

I swap coils with my Tesoros with no noticeable problems at all other than a bit of chatter with the 10X12 on my DeLeon. Granted, I haven't tried comparisons to see if I'm losing performance, but it must not be much or I'd notice. It's been my understanding for quite some time that to guarantee OPTIMUM performance it may be a good idea to send the coil and detector in to be tuned, especially if that coil is to be used most of the time, but that often it isn't necessary. It's not a problem at all with non ID manual ground balance detectors. AND, I may be fortunate to be hunting ground that is mostly forgiving.

I noticed a difference as soon as I turned on the Machine. My Cortez usually gives a good tone as soon as you turn it on but after the Coil swap it was silent. Using the Coil I noticed that TID was a bit different by at least 6 points. This would really affect my Notch settings which on the Golden are adjustable but not on the Cortez. It is no big deal, now I have three coils and two Tesoros so if one goes bad I have a spare.

The Cortes ground balance only works in the all metal mode. The disc mode has a factory preset ground rejection.
