I recently bought a new Cortes. Since all my detecting was 30 yrs ago and not a lot then, maybe the Cortes is over my head. Can someone tell me the easiest modes to start out in etc. till I get more experience and more used to it. In other words how should a beginner start out with a Cortes? Thank you

I would pack up the detector. Head down to the nearest bark chip playground. Turn it on and start huntin'. Start in Disc. mode. Pass your coil over targets, guess what they are, dig up the target and take note as to whether the expected and actual met(using the target clues that the detector gives you...ID numbers and bar graph). Dig everything. Take note as to where targets pinpoint. X over a target to pinpoint, and most of all, have fun and enjoy your time!!!

Start out by turning your disc upto about the L in Foil. Turn your sensitivity to around 8. Use the bargraph to id at first instead of the numbers. The id number spread can be kind of large at first, and the bargraph is very reliable. If you want to get a single id number for the target, use the SUM mode. It is very reliable for giving you a number. Use the notch if you need to kill tabs and/or steel bottle caps.

The hardest thing to do is to turn that disc up into the foil range to kill those trash signals. The Cortes is very sensitive with the disc below foil.

Good luck....Its a nice machine.

Kingfisher, have no fear, the Cortes is very good machine, and very easy to use. You can go to the Tesoro web site and read the field report on the Cortes. It gives a lot of tips and suggestions on how to use this machine. I have been using one since they were first introduced, and you are more than welcome to email me with any questions you might have. I would be more than happy to give you advice and pointers on it.
