Cortes............

I asked the question in another posting and didn't get any answers.

Why the dislike for the Cortes, apart from set ground balance?

I see all this excitement and anticipation of a possible new Target id detector from Tesoro, possibly in the future. Believe me the excitement and anticipation prior to the release of the Cortes was huge, and the machine seemed to be well received immediately following it's release. I purchased one myself and found it to be a fine detector, in fact one of my favorites, and I had XLT, Explorer II, CZ5, Bandito II, and Lobo ST in my stable at the time.

Been out of detecting for a few years now, just returning, but it seems to me the Cortes is not too well thought of.

Can anyone tell me why the Cortes does not have a better reputation among Tesoro fans?

My impression of the main criticisms of the Cortes is the small display is difficult for some to read and the fact that the GB is only functional in the AM mode. Also, the suggested retail price puts it up against some pretty good TID machines from several of the other manufacturers. If you browse through the forums for a bit, you'll find that there are also some satisfied users. I've been using the DeLeon (among others) for about a year and it's working well for me, but I'm hunting mostly pretty decent ground. I've thought about trading up to a Cortes when my budget allows as I have a pretty complete selection for the Tesoro umax machines.

I feel for it's price class the Cortes has fallen behind for a TID machine compared to what's available today.
If the Disc. had manual GB that would be a plus. The preset may be negative to some. Some also say it's to noisy.
Some may want multi-tone (does have tones in SUM mode but not standard search modes - I get along okay with a single tone myself).
Display - strains my poor old eyeballs if I don't have cheaters on - and with cheaters it's still on the small compared to others.
4-"AA" cells would have been nice.
It likes to group coin ID together instead of separately. I guess that was to open resolution at the lower range.
You think they would have had volume control once you got up to that price range.
Some may think the H.O.T. technology would have made that price category - but I'm okay with that - have both types (Tejon, Cibola).

I still have one with little use collecting dust for months now. I just have to many others that I grab first.
It's time to catch up.
Just some of my 2c

The meter has 95 numbers, thats a lot, makes them unstable. Uneven sweeps will cause the numbers to shift. There is only 9 Bars, and so the Bars are much more stable. And then you have the catagories (NICKLE RING TAB). The catagories are the most stable. So, we have 3 target indicators showing at the same time. My Fisher ID Edge has only 36 numbers and they tend to jump around too. Again, uneven sweeps is part of the problem. EDIT. Oops, meant to put this reply on the Deleon post.

My only problem with the Cortes is that it only has a single tone. I find single tone machines mentally fatiqueing for general hunting which means I can only go about two hours with one before I'm worn out mentally. I like all it's features, I just can't hang with the one tone search mode. I've bought 3 or 4 of them trying to get past my hangup, but can't do it.

Tones Rule.

I got to try out the De Leon for awhile, and while I liked it, I couldn't see that the Cortez was going to be heads above it better.
I've suspected for some time that Tesoro has lagged the pack in the TID niche. When I got my F70, I was sure of it.

Nuttin wrong with the Cortez mind you - I aint knockin' it hard. If it works for you, then it works.
I just think there are mo' better models out there.
