Cortes undressed.

First let me say over the years have used a doz. or more Tesoro models and Cortes may be the most misunderstood of currrent models.
Screen is small but doable if you have 20-20 vision or Varilux glasses which gives you reading, mid and long range vision. Recently posted relative small screen before I received the unit and have to retract my statements.
It light, well balanced and I like the feel as ergonomically its right on also with batts under armcup.
Haven't used it long enough but seems to me to be doing well as far as battery longevity.
Sum mode really works as you just have to adjust to it.
Gives you two choices of notch either narrow or wide notch which handles many situations if you wish to notch.
Basic ring area really widens the numbers and easy to pick out the predominant tabs by number and leave them lie.
I hear low tones much better than high so a plus for me however many prefer a tonal system but from previous experience I know by being monotone the audio gives you more variances to dig or not.
Gives you the choice of pinpointing in Disc. or all metal and my all metal won't see much use as disc and x-ing target is right on but imagine some would prefer the all metal but again Tesoro gives you that choice.
In my test garden which has been planted for 20 odd years I can easily get a quarter at 10-12 inches depending on how high I can run my sens and in my area I can run it high and the preset ground balance in disc. handles my ground well.
Not a big fan of all metal hunting but the ground balance is a piece of cake with a 3-3/4 turn adjustment especially if you ever used one of those 10 turn adjustment pots.
Last but not least its well made and I know service after the sale...well Tesoro is second to none...
Whoops for what its worth got a bunch nickles in my last two hunts which tells me Tesoro's like gold jewelry and only a matter of time before one goes in my pouch.
For you naysayers I am not an Employee of Tesoro or affiliated with them in any way.
You know I used to think the old heavy Toltec 100 was Tesoro's best ID unit but this digital remake of it has changed my mind.
Don't ask me why not much info or interest in the Cortes and not much to read about this unit but in my mind a winner for Tesoro and those that use one.

I'll add that so far, the Cortes I picked up last fall is working well for me. Haven't yet put as many hours on it as some of my other detectors because i couldn't get out with it during the winter, but so far I'd have to pretty much agree with Dan -Pa. The screen could be a bit bigger, but as I rely on the sound first, it's okay. I like the notch options and the sum mode is handy at times. The weight is light, the depth is decent and it generally handles quite well.

I have read a time or two about the Cortes having a small meter, a person would think that in todays day and age that there would be some kind of magnifying film or such that a person could put on the meter.

I traded for a Cortes a couple of months ago. had intened to sell it but after using it a while. I changed my mind. I have a mercury dime burried flat at a measured 9 inches. I own several detectors. Some so called high dollar machines. Not many of the detectors I own now will get the 9 inch dime. At least not enough to want to dig it. A couple get it very well. But using the 5 3/4 inch coil, I get it very good with the Cortes. And not only in all metal either. In full discrimination I get the dime very good. I keep telling my detecting buddies I must be dreaming but over and over I get the mercury dime very good. Altho I have several detectors costing more than the Cortes, the Cortes has become my go to detector. Not that others are not very good too. But with 5 3/4 inch coil it is very light and well balanced. I think with the stock coil it seem nose heavy. Just my 2 cents.....Jack

Nice write up Dan. Good to see someone with a lot of experience on different detectors doing a write up on a Cortes. I have not used one, but my guess about why there may not be as much interest or information is the lack of ground balance adjust in discriminate mode. That is actually why I hardly ever think about getting one. If an absolute steal of a price comes by, I'd go for it; but other wise ... probably not.

Again with the batteries under the armcup it sort of compensates for the coil and along with its weight less than 3 lbs. ergonmically one of the best I have ever used in that respect. Of course we are all individuals with different arm lengths and of course how long you use the bottom rod has to be taken into consideration. With me all fell into place and believe me I have swung a few over the years...
As far as the small meter if you have 20-20 eyesight or use a varilux type of eyeglass which compensates for that distance between reading and far it is certainly doable..
Just like the Minelab people all must have big arms guess the Tesoro people must have good eyes as the Toltec 100. toltec 11 and now the Cortes all have small meters.
I can readily understand bifocal people may have a problem but the meter holds a good target for 6 to 10 seconds where the unit can be pulled forward to use the bottom focal for reading to read the screen. Imagine Tesoro understands as the Deleon was made with bigger digits and imagine their next meter unit if it ever comes will compensate with a bigger meter to benefit every type of user.

Finally a Post about the Cortes or Deleon! I have the Deleon I want the Cortes! Both seem to be like the red headed step children of the Tesoro Brand? I'm sure there is something that can make that information bigger... GL & HH Pat

Bifocals don't work well with me at all, tried them can't see clear from 2.5-6 feet, too fuzzy.
Eye doc said try trifocals, exchanged the bi's for tri's. They are great, just can't stand to wear them all the time due to the two fuzzy lines I see where the lenses meet. But everything looks natural with excellent transition between the lenses.
So I also had a reg. pair of glasses made that I wear most of the time.

Varilux is a brand name for a trifocal...

I know you guys are going to get a kick out of this but I take my Bifocals off and see screen well..

Had a Cataract removed a while back and now my right eye is 20-20 but still wear glasses as have a cataract that will be coming off this fall and of course need the low focal for reading....lets hope the fall removal is a success as begone glasses next season and reading glasses in a pocket..

Eye Doc. tried to explain the situation but sort of technical and well it works and probably more applicable to an eyeglass forum...
