Cortes owners

I have a Vaquero and Cortes and I'm not very happy with the Cortes. The unit is very noisy, I cant even use it in a moderatly trashy area.

I generally coinshoot so I set the disc at max (Vaquero) where mostly only silver, clad, copper, and 2 liter bottle caps break the silence.
If I try this with the Cortes, its popping off on almost everything. It eventually filters the junk but I waste a lot of time going back over
beer caps, pull tabs etc. The target ID is kind of quirky also, I have yet to see the ID number between 72 and 95. Most items with a richer
reading than Zn go directly to 95. Down lower on the scale its more accurate with a finer resolution in ID numbers. The notch works,
but once again I must sweep the object a couple times to determine audibly if its being filtered out. I sent the unit in to Tesoro to be
calibrated and they returned it with a clean bill of health but no change to the way it is functioning. My instincts tell me that the discrimination
should function better and the target ID should have readings between 72 and 95. I suspect automatic GB because it acts like my Vaquero
when the GB is mis-adjusted.

How does this stack up with other Cortes owners?

My Cortes gives me readings between 72 and 95. Screw caps and zinc pennies are usually 78 - 83. I've had junk readings of 90. The Disc ground balance is set just right for my soil, no noise when bobbing. The notch is inconsistent with each sweep over the same target, like it can't make up its mind to reject pulltabs or not. The regular Disc seems OK.

I get readings between 72 and 95 as well. The pre-set GB is perfect for my soil, so the Cortes works like a champ for me.

I have a Cortes and a Tejon. I took them both out today to test a bit, in the yard. In fact I had all my machines out playing with two nickels and two pulltabs, not together, in 4 differsnt places. I was checking out how they ID the nickels differently than the pulltabs, or not. All my machines except for the cortes would give me a slightly different id between pt and nickel. With the Tejon I could disc out the nickel and still hit the pulltab, not with the Cortes. With the Cortes the id was the same and I could not disc out the nickel and still hit the pt. It was both or nothing. I'm not really happy with that. I will try some more, real world testing with them. The pts and the nickels were not buried, maybe that will make a difference. I tried the Cortes with both the stock and a 5.5 coil.

My Cortez is real noisy in discriminate mode , but I live in Wisconsin with high mineralized soil. Im real new to the hobby and have a lot to learn , but I'm thinking of trading my Cortez in for a non T.I.D. detector and am thinking of going with the tejon. I'm mainly a coinshooter so what type of Tesoro would people recommend for coinshooting seing as the tejon is located in Tesoros relic detector section?

In my experience, the Cortes is a better coin hunter than the Tejon. I did well with my Tejon, but I did really well with my Cortes.

The areas that I search are pretty trashy and my Cortez is so noisy that it really frustrates me. I have dug some pretty deep coins for here in Northern Wisconsin , but I dig way too much trash also. I know that digging junk is an unavoidable fact of detecting if you don't want to miss any good items , but I'm digging way too much junk iron that I feel should be dicrimated out. I'm just a newbie at detecting and I have an incrediable amount of knowledge to learn about the hobby (that's why I joined this forum) , but the Cortez just doesn't seem to be the right machine for me. I've read pretty mixed reviews on the Cortez , some love it and some seem to have the same problems that I'm dealing with. Like I said before I'm no expert by any means , but that's what I've experienced in my very limited time of metal detecting so far.

If you think the Cortes is noisy, wait till you get your new Tejon!! :lmfao:

At least you will be able to GB it in disc, so you may end up better off.

I have used Cortes for some 3 years and it was an excellent machine, and it is very well suited to soils in northern parts of Poland. Despite of using it only in discrimination mode, I was always ground balancing it in All Metal. I have felt that it had an impact on Disc, or perhaps it was only my imagination. I use Tejon now for nearly 4 years now and it might be slightly better machine than Cortes, but noisier and more difficult to use. Ideal would be the combination of both detectors, possibile in a new package, with a larger display, frequency change, powered by 4 AA batteries, with option of using concentric 12

I hope I don't regret my decision , but I guess I won't know until I try. I'll keep you updated on if I think I made a good choice or not , but the detecting season will be winding down in a few weeks here in Northern Wisconsin. Brrrrrr - it's too cold for my liking already - I was born and raised in Wisconsin , but I hate Winter and the cold because all of my hobbies are done in spring , summer , and fall. I tend to hibernate in winter. I guess that will give me plenty of time to research possible new detecting sites for next spring. Winter was just way too long last year and the spring wasn't very pleasant either. I hoping for a shorter one this year.

Ever since I read this Post I've been watchin and listening to General Cortes lately.
Went to two Parks one clean the other trashy. Once I determined the trash by the bar and number average.
I found a wheat at each Park, actually three, the trashy Park gave up two in one hole.
But both showed full bar RT, solid tone, and 62 +/- . Another example of taking info and deciding to walk or not.
After about 5-6 battery changes in two wisconsin seasons. Things are starting to make $ense now.
I would have to say Cortes and I are just starting to get this Raiding the Parks of Gold and Silver down finally.
There needs to be more Postings on using this gentleman raider called "Cortes".

I love my Cortes. I have greater success with it than I did with my Tejon, Golden, GTI2500 etc. The trick is to get some hours on it and really learn what it is telling you. I can not believe the ratio of dimes, nickels, and quarters vs. pennies that I get with the Cortes. And the 60 hours on a set of batteries is amazing too!

I think the Cortes is a very under rated machine. I suppose if you live in areas with nasty ground, then the preset GB in disc is going to hurt. But for me, in my area, it's set perfectly.

I will keep this machine for years. Maybe by then Tesoro will have a new machine that will interest me more.
