Cortes meter ID and coil size

Interesting all metal mode air test. The 5.75 concentric coil correctly ID's a copper wheat penny at 5 inches max. At 6 inches with the 5.75, the screen remains blank or shows jumping ID. The 9 x 8 concentric coil and the 8.5 inch widescan correctly ID's the penny at 6 inches max. At 7 inches with both those coils the screen remains blank or shows jumping ID. Does anyone know if the 12 x 10 concentric will correctly ID deeper than the 9 x 8. All audio signals remained strong.

Using the 12 x 10 coil on the Cortes I dug a fatty Indian head penny at 11". It was a weak signal but very repetable from every direction. You should get an extra 2 inches out of the bigger coil, but of course, its dependant on soil conditions you might encounter.

All metered machines will falter on really deep coins, because there is just not enogh signal strength some times and often the numbers on really deep targets are a bit lower than for shallower targets. If you know this, it can help you decide when to dig. If the depth is reading 9" and its a weak signal, bouncing around, I would dig it just to find out what it is.

Thanks Scully. I found out from Backwoods Detectors that Tesoro has a 10.5 inch round concentric for the Cortes. Will get that one, I like round coils. When I tested the 9 x 8 for meter ID with coin at max depth range I saw that the north - south swing gave a more accurate ID than a east - west swing. The north - south swing is along the 9 inch length. That makes me believe that a larger coil will ID deeper.

Your machine will pick up and give an audible signal noticeably deeper than it will reliabley identify the target, regardless of what coil you use.
