Cortes likes fast sweep speed for best meter ID.

Air tested target ID using 9 x 8 coil that was placed under a 5 inch high cardboard box. Swept 3 gold mens rings across surface of box at different speeds. Slow sweep speed produced 3 very short bars that were splashed across 5 cent, tab 1, and tab 2 all at the same time. Fast sweep produced a steady single tall bar at 5 cent, Tab 1, or Tab 2, depending on which ring was used. Got same results with 8 inch round coil. Slow sweep gave no audio, fast sweep did. ID numbers were a little tighter too with a fast sweep.

jabbo,
Interesting that slower sweep did not give audio. I hunt almost entirely by sound, even with the target ID detectors I have.

Wondering if you have noticed and dug an ID'd target that didn't sound off?

I sweep fast when hunting and when pinpointing so I never really noticed before that slow sweep doesn't work, found out during an air test. When I get a beep I always check the meter because I can't tell by audio one target from another, except iron. Maybe it's the nature of the monotone or it could be my old ears not too good anymore. The meter is a necessity for me.

jabbo,
Thanks for the added info.

I pulled the manual from the Tesoro site and among other things it says:

"The all metal circuit uses a single channel to detect various metals. The discriminate circuit uses two different channels, then amplifies and filters them. The detector will then compare the signals and determine whether or not to beep at the target."

It appears to ID all the time and determines whether or not to beep when in discriminate mode based on an algorithm.

I am sweeping slower as elbow doesn't like fast. I was doing the speed ratchet swing with the wrenches today putting a new radiator in our van and am feeling like I got run over by the van. A lot of us aren't even close to our physical prime anymore ... your ears, my elbow, and some others here with more serious things ... but we are still kicking!

Keep up the hunting and reporting!

I have to change my story here about "no audio" during slow sweep. Today I was in a park and even with very slow sweep I was getting audio signal form buried targets. I have no clue why I got no audio from slow sweep in the air test.
