CORTES IN LAST PLACE...A BLOWHARD AND BIG MOUTH PERSON.

There are 7 of us who work together and detect together on weekends...No matter where you are, there is always one person who know's it all and like's to rub it in....This person has a GT and we have to listen to how great a machine it is....We live in Tampa,Florida and there was a civil war battle fought just north of us....We know a man that own's land adjacent to this battle field and we have his permission to hunt....

The person who own's the land, has the GT and has a couple of spots where he say's there are deep signals...He ran the coil,,12 inch,,over
the spot and each of us listen to the signal...Then the tesoro with a large coil was passed over the spot and nothing...

..................................................................................That is it guy's.......................................................................................

I think you may be comparing apples and oranges a bit here. How big was the coil on the Cortez? And what were the settings on the two machines? Did any one dig the targets to see what they were? And if so, determine just how much deeper the GT was picking them up? Were both machines equipped with the same headphones? I'm not familiar with the GT and how it compares cost wise etc. with other detectors so - should one expect these two models to run neck and neck? I've seem posts where users of several different makes claim to have picked up targets behind the GT that had been missed. Every detector has its limit and quirks that can look bad beside a different machine and yet still be a decent machine generally, and maybe outperform the other machine under different conditions. I'd be curious to hear more detailed information.
Dig deep and often,

Was the Cortes properly ground balanced, and the attempt made in all metal mode?

The Sovereign GT (actually all the Sovereigns) are known for their depth. It is possible that the Cortes is just not reaching the depth of the Sovereign. Don't forget, the Sovereigns are using 17 frequencies, not just 1. I don't know enough about the technology to know if this adds depth, but it probably doesn't hurt it.

I agree that the signal should be dug. Maybe it's junk that you wouldn't want to dig anyway.

Sounds like you are only interested in depth. People buy and use machines for many reasons, and like and dislike machines for many reasons. The GT is a good machine, but so is the Cortes. Are they equal? No. Is one deeper than the other? Yep. But you have to decide whats best for you. Do you want the extra weight of Minelab? The 2 year warranty? The steeper learing curve, double D vs concentric coils? Or do you want the easy and light weight Cortes with a life time warranty? Thats why there are so many brands and models, everybody is different and has different preferences. It sounds like you have GT envy. Maybe you should get one so you can experience the difference between the two, then decide which you like best. You cant base the judgement of machine on a single target. There are way too many other variables involved.

Well put, Scully!

Great explaination Scully

Ex-Gt user here guys. Yeah. The GT finds the deep ones. I had one for a few months and was quite impressed with the depth and the the over all performance with it. But as mentioned earlier it is a lot heavier then a Cortes. And what really bugged me was the control set up being on the back of the box under my elbow. To make any changes on the controls, i.e. using the pinpoint mode, I had to lift and twist my arm to get to the controls! That was a pain. And to get the most out of it you had to search real slow.
Traded it for a White's m6 with a couple of extra coils. Would have definitely traded it for a Cortes had one been offered.
Happy New Year
