cortes help

My first md purchase. I have been following the manual to learn the controls. I went outside to try to set the ground balance ( I do not think our soil here is highly mineralised). I set the sensitivity up high and set threshold to low sound level. I can set the ground balance so that there is no change in sound or intensity when lowering the coil. My question is. Is it normal to get a mwaaaaaaa sound when you lift the coil up? I can not seem to get rid of it when lifting the coil straight up.

Lee, I'll try and help all I can, but I do have a few questions along the way, especially because this was your first post on the Findmall Forums.

QUESTIONS: What type of metal detecting do you plan to do?

What types of sites do you plan to search?

What area f the country are you in as that will help readers possibly know the general level of mineralization there?

What made you decide on the Tesoro Cort

Thanks for the reply Monte:
Question 1
Game for anything. Shorter list is what I am not interested in. nails foil tabs In general trash. :)
2
vintage locations (homesteads, town sites schools churches etc) , parks, beaches. play grounds basicly any where something colletable or of interest might be found.
3
southern Alberta about 80ks north of the Montana border. 150Ks east of the rocky mnts (no salt water beaches around not many fresh water ones around either. Any depression around here that holds water for two weeks is automaticaly called a lake).

Have been reading forums checking reviews for about 8 years. The cortes just struck a chord with me. It probably is not the "best detector" out there but it appealed to me.

As metioned above I have been reading. Have not consulted anyone for their opinion. And as far as reviews go, our local paper has a reporter who does a review on a new veihicle every week and he has never driven one he does not like.

I knew what ground balance was for and comments mentioned in various topics about detectors that such and such detector would be much better with an adjustable ground balance rather than having it factory set..

For my test I was in my yard. Brown grass frozen ground. Used disc with the disc setting turned down as low as it would go to find an area with no responce. (conclusion I have a very trashy yard)
I was setting the threshold at about foot and half. So next time I will set it lower. I was also lowering and raising the coil slowly.
I was using all metal mode for the gb settings. Did not try lifting the coil in disc mode.
I will use your suggestions and try again as soon as the weather warms up a bit more or the urge over rides my desire to stay warm:)
In the mean time I will keep reading the manual. Thanks again
Lee
