Cortes Depth

Active member
I have never owned a Tesoro, and my Cortes will be here next week. I was just wandering if the depth is in the same ballpark as the Vaquero? I just can not find much on the average depth of the Cortes. Also, I just ordered a Clean Sweep so I can try and locate a total of 3 lost family rings that I still have not found, has this coil effect the depth of the detector in any ones experience?
Thanks

too many variables involved. Besides, raw depth is generally less important that functional depth and discrimination characteristics.

So, what have you been using, and what prompted your decision for a Cort

Wow,
Monte, you are the best. Thank you for being so thorough in your answer. I purchased it used from the original owner, so I had to go by what little I cold find out about the Cortes on the Internet. My main detector right now is an X-Terra 70, but just wanted to try a Tesoro because of their reputation as being one of the best. My ground is Low mineralization, and the only reason I got the clean sweep is because one of the rings was lost in a large pasture. My question about depth was basically for a general idea about it's depth with ideal soil and settings. I figure the rings are no more than 6 inches deep. Thanks again Monte. I really appreciate the time you took for your answers.

Just air tested my 3 x 18 coil on Cortes. A boys 14k gold ring with square stone gives a short but decent signal at 6 inches, super tuned in Disc mode. Decent signal at 7 inches in All Metal mode.

Thanks for the info jabbo. One of the rings is a silver ring that belonged to my father lost 40 years ago, on is my brothers silver class ring lost 25 years ago, and one is my father in laws gold ring that is around the size of a class ring. I appreciate that info you posted.

Ground Balance reference Number is with the X-Terra 70 in your average dirt?

I think I would have considered an elliptical 19.75 kHz coil for the X-T 70 to provide coverage. That way you'd be able to adjust the Ground Balance for any mode and any coil.

I hope your Cort

Good post, Monte.

Speaking for myself, most of what I find of value is usually not more than 8" deep. Digging hits that register beyond 8"-9" are time consuming and the TID is not as able to tell if it's junk or not. If I want to dig deep and dig often, I use "all metal" and don't rely on the TID on my De Leon and listen to the sound. Otherwise, the D does a good job on IDing up to 8" in Disc mode and I don't waste as much time digging up ghosts. I would rather have a detector that was great at 8" than iffy at 10".

a buddy of mine had the Cortes and he really liked it. I use the Tejon as my main machine and I really like it.

The point is we both were satisfied.

He was happy with what he was finding and I was happy with my loot.

That's what it's really all about.

Some people just chase their own tail all the time.

There's a lot to say for being content.

I dont have a Crotez, but I have, and have had, several Tesoros. As Monte said, make sure you have it grounds balanced accurately. It's hard to give advice on finding the rings when we dont know where they were lost. Were they lost round the respective homes, or all in the one yard. You mentioned not havi9ng found them yet. What other search methods have you used. I've be asked a couple of times to try to find rings or jewellery lost in the backyard when the wearer lost it doing some work in said yard. It can, and has happened that the item has been thrown out with the cuttings or clippings before the owner realised it was missing. Back to the Cortez. If you hunt in All Metal, with the machine properly ground balanced and ignore readings on the meter, you should have some success in finding the rings if they are still there. Here is Aus. we also have the added problem of at least two different species of birds who consider things like jewellery as wonderful additions to their nests. What I am saying is this....if you dont find the rings It may not be your fault or the fault of the detector. Good Luck, Sapper.

hiya silverman,,the cortez is a majic machine,,the depth is better than most tesoro machines ,other than the tejon,,and cibola or vachero but probably on par,,,depending on the terain,,,its got a manual balance (so has the Vachero) but the auto is so good ,,WHY PAY MORE ??? it dont however have ,,SUPERTUNE,, and thats the boy for extra depth (if you can use it on the terrain),,the target id is really good though,,i love it,,,,, the tejon over in England was a bit too sparky and registered iron as a good target a little more than the other tesoros,,but they produced the vachero/cibola to make a more relaxed but deep machine ,i can tell you i have a cibola, the auto vachero,,and it is totally AWSOME,,you can supertune this sucker also and the depth is huge,,,they have given it an extended disc. and you can litterally choose (up to a point) what iron to reject,,,BUT the advantage that i see with E>D> 180 discrimination,,is that i had it fitted from new with the alternative 12 x 10 d.d. coil which is less suseptible to minerals than the stock coil,,, and on SALT WET sand and IN THE WATER,,this machine EXCELS,,,it is ,TOTALLY SILENT,,,,its as quiet as the minelab gt,,and as deep ,,if not deeper on small targets,,,the other obvious advantages are,,(1 ) super fast recovery after iron( the g.t. is crap at that) try it yourself,,,put an iron nail next to a good target of ANY description on the ground and see how fare you have to move the nail before the machine picks it up ???, (2) to anyone who has used the g.t. is,,,its half the weight,,,lovely,,and,,,its HALF THE PRICE,,,,,EVEN LOVELIER,,(if there is such a word),,i will tell you what,,,its the best all round machine i have ever owned,,,,PERIOD ,,,,if TESORO plan in the future to stop production,,,,,i will buy 2 more in the same configuration and put them in the cupboard,,,,,I LOVE IT ,,best rgds:ukflag:
