corroded penny vdi?

Can anyone tell me if they have found corroded pennies that do not vdi as a penny? I have been finding corroded pennies that are no where close to the vdi for a penny. Anywhere from 18 to 50. On a non corroded penny I get the correct vdi. I have been using 5"excellerator,no disc, cjw.low threshold and +2 gain.
Just wondering if this is normal.
Thanks and HH

Yes it is, when corroded I have found them in the 30's. I dug a corroded nickel at the beach that consistantly gave an iron reading.
