?cordless phone interference

I went to two different old houses c1800, and had the same problem: Within 15 feet of the front door, Everything but super shallow objects nulled out and the threshold hum disappeared unless I dropped iron mask to minus 16, or held the detector still. Noise cancel did nothing, nor did dropping sensitivity or changing recover filters. Once I moved further away, I got better response. At one of the houses, a cordless phone was sitting on the front step. I bet I was missing some good finds near the front steps. Any advice?

I have had a similar problem w/cell phone interferance. Used to carry my cell phone on my belt, when it would ring, it would cause interferance. So I would guess that the cordless phones being 900mz had something to do with the problem. JMHO <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Today, went to a different unoccupied old house--no cordless or cell phone. Had excessive nulling all through the front yard--from front of house to the street nearly 40 feet away. Later, I went to a playground, had no nulling, but noted incredible sensitvity to large metal bars 2-3 feet away. Is my nulling due to underground pipes, or something else? It is incredibily frustrating being in a 200 year old front yard and not be able to detect properly.

How high are you running sensativity? Are you using Manual, or Auto? Sounds like you are running the machine to hot for conditions. And last but not least by anymeans ,Did you do Noise Cancel?

Noise cancelled several times at each site; manual sensitivity around 20. Do you think that's too hot?

I wouldn't think that manual 20 would be to hot. I have found with my exp that some sites I have to drop the sensativity down to 15 or run in auto.Maybe Upstate Jim or Big Mike can help a little more. I don't know what else it might be unless the area has been filled with coal slag. I hope you can get the answer.

Sometimes my XS gets very noisy. It sounds off like a silver coin with the crosshairs in the upper right and the depth 11 inches. Sens locked at 29. Tried noise cancellation. When I put the sens on auto, it clears up.
Too frequently when I go on pinpoint the machine goes crazy and beeps non stop untill I do noise cancel.

Were you near a farm with electric fences? do the people own a dog and have those invisable dog fences? maybe power transformers nearby? if its iron or bad ground you might try using low iron mask and run in ferrous mode so the falsing will be low toned if you can live with it

2 of the 3 houses had dogs--not sure if there was invisible fence or not. The third one did not. Next time I will try decreasing sensitivity, shifting to auto, or lowering iron mask and using ferrous.
Does anyone have a good solution for detecting near invisible fence?

Why don;t you try using Auto instead of Manual....this might solve your problem.

In June we hunted a sight with the fence, the homeowner unplugged the fence but it had battery back up, so that didn't help. I didn't have my explorer at the time, but with my pro 6000 xl I lowered the sensitivity some and still had constant interference, but targets would still give a tone and a meter reading in between the noise, if something sounded good I used very tiny swings to ID the target. When I went to pinpoint mode the noise went away and I could pinpoint normally. I did find my first Barber quarter, a Barber dime, one Merc, one IH, and a pocket full of older wheaties.
I haven't been there yet with the explorer, but I hope the info helps.
Post your results, as I am curious. HH George

I run into problems with coal slag and clinckers a lot where I hunt. I think this stuff was spread in certain areas around the homes here especially near the street. It makes it very difficult to hunt at least with the stock coil. Coal was the primary source of heat in the midwest cities for many years but I don't know about your area.

Same here in Central IL. The folks used to make a path from the street to the front porch in the winter on the snow and ice with cinders and ashes from their furnace. In the spring when it would melt the grass would cover the cinders up. Sure is tough detecting. But it is do-able just lower the sens or raise the coil up a little and go slow.
