Copper ???

OG

New member
I am wondering if anyone on here has ever found native copper (nuggets ), pre form copper, or copper relics ( not copper coins ) while metal detecting. If so was the signal similar to what you get when you dig pennies or was it different ?
Thanks,
OG

Out of interest, why are you just looking for mainly copper related finds ??? can you expand on that one please as i have been trying to work out the logic behind it.

The signal on copper items will vary according to the size of the copper object being detected. In the late 90's I hunted a road construction project that was located near a bayou in the old part of town and was finding copper slag in one area of the site. I always keep my discriminate level at the lowest setting when possible and I remember those dime-size copper slag pieces reading up around copper penny on my Tesoro. Larger pieces of copper will sound larger than a penny especially when you size up the target using all-metal mode to check the signal width of the object being detected. Hope this makes a little sense:)

If I understand you correctly you are looking for items made out of raw copper like the prehistoric copper used by the Indians to make spear points and arrow heads. If this is the case I have found 2 arrow heads (2000 years old)and a Friend has found a very nice spear point that dates 3500-6000 years old while coin hunting and if I remember right they read like the IH pennies and early Wheat pennies just slightly lower than a later date wheat penny.

I used to prospect in Arizona a few years back. Finding copper nuggets in dry creek beds was not uncommon in certain areas....well most areas actually. Usually hunted with a PI detector but off and on with the newer gold bug pro. Usually small copper nuggets came in around d zinc penny for the most part.
