Hello, can anybody give me an idea what this buckle was used for, its a little over an inch square and thin, doesnt seem heavy enough to be anything but decoration, any idea on how old it is? shoe buckle?
Thanks

Could be jewelery.

I found something like hat a few years ago. It had a part with pin and it looked like ribbon ran to something like what you found. It was not damaged and the ribbon was long gone.

I think the real clue is that it is thin and decorative. It was probably painted or plated once.

Maybe a suspender buckle, I've dug many similar to yours in military camps, most of them are pretty thin, does yours have any patent date or writing on the back?

No markings I could see, the opening for strap is only about 3/4 of an inch, cant see how it could hold up to any real strain.
