I doubt it would be that hard to rig up. It may be as simple as backlighting
the LCD screen. I don't know if it passes light, but that's what it looks like
being as it seems to be even across the LCD. He's probably using one or
more LED's for the light. It's possible you could semi outline the buttons too,
but not sure. I've never even taken mine apart yet since I got it...
I used outboard lights on mine. I used the LED lights with bendable stems
that I can get at the dollar store. I used two of them side by side if I really
wanted a lot of light. Mine not only lit the display, but it lit the ground I was
detecting, so I often used two..
I were to rig up inboard LED lights, I would use a small switch to be able to
turn them off when not needed. Would save battery power.
But actually, I've got to where I really don't care for hunting at night.
I don't see the point in the aggravation when I can do it 12 hours later
when it's light. If I hunt here at night, the skeeters will eat me up.
If I hunt up in the country at night, I might just detect a snake or whatever
looking for it's dinner. I'm much less likely to spot one at night.
