convince me!

I have been thinking seriously about buying a GT, but there are several things that bother me. Everything I read says it doesn't like disturbed ground(I often search plowed fields) and you MUST search much slower. How much depth do you lose in disturbed ground?
Why do you think it is better than an MXT or NAUTILUS(which I have)? I don't hunt beaches so what is better about the GT?
Thanks

I don't think we can convince you. You are absolutely right about both the GT and Explorer hating disturbed ground and especially freshly plowed Fields. You will lose 40-60% of the detectors depth capability in a plowed field. I was totally amazed at how poorly my multifrequency machines worked in a plowed field. At first I thought it was my machines or the ground minerals but then I started reading about other people running into the same problem. It has been my experience that a single frequency machine will blow the doors off my GT or Explorer in a plowed field. Now whenever I get an opportunity to hunt a plowed field I no longer take a multifrequency machine I go back to the single frequency machines for disturbed ground. Machines like an Advantage would be a good choice for a Field Hunter. JMHO

Hi Beachcomber,

Did you ever use a CZ in a plowed field or similiar, meaning the area you say the multi freq machines like the Sov and Explorer dont work well? I was wondering if that applied to them also.
Your right, the Advantage is a good one for that but the darn thing has no ID so your digging everything above your disc set point. In alot of places that can mean alot of digging for very few worthwhile finds as you must know:minelab:

If you plan on mostly hunting plowed fields the MXT would be one I would use as you can swing a lot faster and cover more ground. I have a MXT also and my wife uses it and does good with it and get more coins than I do with the GT or my Explorer, but we hunt many parks and ball field and she gets the quantity while I get the older and deeper ones so I get the quality with the GT or the Explorer.
Now I have used my GT too in plowed fields and I can not complain about the depth, but I did have to go slower to hear the targets that were not surface.
The Sovereigns and the Explorer are for those that want to take the time to learn them and want the deeper and better finds, so they are more for quality finds while the MXT and some of the others is for quantity. The choice is up to you which you want.

You say you have the Nautilus.I have the Nautilus 11B and the Sov GT and I like the 11B a lot better for field hunting.I'm still getting used to the sov,but I can tell you ,the 11B will go a lot deeper than the sov.We have bean and corn fields here in southern Ohio, and they do no till planting,so I need/have a machine that will go beyond the 5/6inch depth to the stuff thats not being turned up. I have been reading abut how the coil of BBS machines like the explorer and GT need to be flat and close to the ground. How about in the woods where you may have several inches of leaves and decay or several inches of pine needles? Does it still get deep in this situation, where the coil is several inches above the soil?

It's the same with all detectors......

Not just Minelab.........

You get the best depth and performance with the coil level and as close to the ground as possible.

If you have to lift the coil because of ground obstructions you will lose depth. That's just the way it is if you hunt those locations.

thats pretty much up my alley. where i live there are alot of old nature parks that use to be old pinic grounds in the 30's and 40's. now they call them nature parks that are all over grown and heavily wooded. i use my explorer with a 5 inch coil and just brush the leaves aside with the coil. ive gotten alot of old silver out of those parks. i shorten up the shaft because i got to get under small trees and bushes and sometimes crawl through underbrush. whats nice with detecting in areas like that is the holes you dig you just push the dirt back into the hole with your boot. its not like detecting on a regular play type park or at a school. you just keep moving.

Although a CZ is a two frequency unit it does not loose depth in a plowed field as Minelabs multi-freuency units just work different.Advantage would be a good choice however the CZ has a segmented meter which would be a plus...never used a Nautilus so I can't comment....
