I have been doing research for about a year in anticipation of jumping head first into metal detecting. I don

Coins/jewelry is your goal eh? You could also post this question on an open forum like the plain old "metal detecting" thread for lots of advice from the users of the other mfgs you mentioned...you will have people piping up from all the other mfgs.! In order not to snipe you away from this Forum, my buddy hunts with an Etrac, hes killer with it, but has been detecting for 30 years, and focuses on deep silver. Fortunately for YOU, this Etrac forum is VERY active with lots of helpful people here that will reduce your learning curve substantially. I've followed it and seen it happen all the time, great group of users here! They wont steer you wrong, most of them started with a differrent brand I believe, and are now dedicated Minelab users...full disclosure on my part, I'm not a Minelab user, only been in this sport for 3yrs, but I hunt jewelry/coins, and read all the forums for helpful tips. Welcome to this grand addiction!:beers:

I just started metal detecting at the beginning of December 2012, I bought a Safari because I too read about the Minelabs and thought Safari since it was advertiesed as a "turn on and go" machine, which it is. However, as much as I love my Safari and I do, the E-trac provides the user with more information. So I bought a used E-trac, still have the Safari and plan to keep it and use it as a backup or for one of my kids to swing, to me it was important to have as much information before digging. I should have just bought a brand new E-trac to begin with would have saved money lol.

As for the ease of use, you can still turn it on and go pretty easy!! So even if you need time to learn all the different settings you will still be very productive! Like mudpuppy said, there are a lot of people on here with E-tracs and you can find TONS of info online. Good luck with whatever detector you decide to go with!

I used whites for years, then changed to an at pro and just hated it due to a lack of a threshold, so I bought an etrac and love it. I wish I would have bought an etrac first. Last summer found 2 silvers with ATP and 27 with etrac.

You made a great choice. Just learn it. A lot of people start pushing buttons too soon. Learn the functions and how each one effects your style of hunting and the ground you hunt in and then try another. You have already hit a homerun with your detector selection just touch all the bases. Good luck. HH :minelab:

well a buddy of mine got the etrac right off the bat, I spent a few days with him and he was off and running, he finished his first yr of detecting (2012) with 117 silver......so yes it can be an excellent beginner detector

I was in the same boat as you. Hunted with a BH for a year and decided I liked the hobby a lot so I bought an etrac. Other than the forum and the etrac handbook, I had to learn it on my own. It took a couple months to figure things out but since then it's been a lot of fun. You'll be happy with your choice.

First, welcome to what I believe is the best detector there is .With that said ,in the same breath, don't get discouraged.Alot of people buy a top of the line machine and almost expect the "unbelievable" finds to just appear. Well after 35 years of this wonderful "sport" I can tell you there is alot more to it than a good machine .To expect good finds on a consistent basis you will have to search many, many hours.I can also tell you the finds are there but you'd better love this hobby to be a person with a great collection .It's like I tell people , if a person wants to play the violin, just because they buy a Stradivarius does not mean that they'll be able to play the violin. There will be many hours of practice but soon a tune will be played .There are also many of us that can play a pretty good" tune" on about any" fiddle" we pick up.If you love the hobby and are not in a hurry , you'll do just fine !

Get the e-trac . not a problem for a beginner at all. Just spend the time with it and you will have no problems.
