Control box? Neck? Chest? Shaft? Belt?

Mirco

New member
Hi, Experts! Magicians! Wizards!

I see some beach/wader guys have their control box mounted on the chest. Some - even almost on the neck. Why?
Where is it better to have it mounted? Neck? Chest? Shaft? Belt?

It is very important for me!!

Hi Mirco,

I've been around a while and have learned a lot, but certainly don;t know it all. Every day is a new learning experience!!!

That being said---I know that some detectors seem to work better with the control box hung from the body and some are best left mounted on the coil shaft. The Infinium in my opinion is best left on the shaft if you wade in the water to hunt!!!

I don't know about it's use on dry land though,or diving . I have used it shaft mounted on the beach with excellent results.

Hope this helps Friend,

May be they want to keep it out of contact with water as much as possible? Weight in water is not an issue at all!

One thing I forgot to mention, is that the coil cable is going to get a lot more abuse if the control is off the shaft.

The constant flexing of the cable will cause it to break where it connects to the control!!!

This is just about the most needed common repair.

It's would be a personal preferance I would think. I hip mount all my machines, land and water. You will have less problems with the cable if you were to shaft mount. I have chest mounted my sov. when I wanted to venture out in the shallow water with it. HH willia

I chest mounted my Garrett Sea Hunter for underwater use because I didn't want it tangling with something on my side. Weight belts and all that garbage can hang stuff up. I made the harnes out of webbing and all I had to swing underwater was the coil. No unit to swing. For similiar reasons, I made a harness for my CZ7aPro to fit on my chest because, again, I didn't want to swing the electronics. I can look down and see what the screen is telling me. The only problem I have found is that it takes a concerted effort to push the pinpoint button when the detector can give a little while being mounted that way. ALso hip mounted the Fisher underwater, but it come with an easy slide mount that hooks over a weight belt. Why swing electronics if you don't have to? Jim

In the case of the Infinium, there seems to be a lot more false signals if it is used in the water with the control mounted off the shaft!!!

That was my experience and that of others that have posted on the problem.

My water machine is a White's BHID, and chest-mounting it is the best way to eyeball the indicator lights. Also with the control box on my chest all I need to swing is the shaft and coil. As a final bonus, while the control box is supposed to be waterproof to 25', if I'm searching up to my neck the control box is usually barely underwater, so I fret less about any leaky seal. When I move to dry or wet sand I remove my shaft weight and mount the control box back on the shaft, since bending over to scoop or dig on land with the chest mount is cumbersome. Your results may vary, see what suits you best.

I have a Fisher CZ-20 and I have it chest mounted. The CZ-20 is a heavy machine and would tire me out in no time if it were mounted on the shaft. Never tried it around my waist.

For me, chest mounting is the best n=method.
