Contact to hunt on Private land

I recently acquired a Garrett ACE 250 and have been itching to get started. The problem, how to get permission
to hunt on private property. I have located a couple of what might be good spots but am unsure how to approach
the owners and what concerns they might have. What questions they may ask. Any help would be appreciated.

.... dress up nicely in your jeans and sleeved shirt. Knock on the door and step back so as to not "be in their face". Introduce yourself, tell them you have admired their property and the possible history it holds.

Tell them your hobby is searching for old buttons and coins with your metal detector. Ask if it would be possible to search their field / yard for buttons and coins and that you remove all trash you find and leave no trace of target recovery (don't use the word DIG .... it provides a visual image of a destroyed yard). You'd be glad to also be on the look out for any old tools or jewelry they or other family members may have lost and given up hope of ever finding .... you'd love to return it if you find something they have lost.

Also offer to show them how you search and recover a target and tell them they are welcome to tag along while you search. Also offer to show them whatever you find.

Sometimes the landowner will ask that you give them all the coins you find as a condition to search. You'll have to decide if that's acceptable to you.

Do not offer a signed liability release unless they ask for one. Have a simple one ready just in case they ask.

If they say no, thank them for their time and apologise for disturbing them. Offer them your card "in case you ever lose something and may need help finding it. Smile and leave.

If they give you permission, ask when you might be able to do your search. After your search, if it's productive, you may want to offer to give them a few coins or buttons and / or bottle of wine if you see evidence they may enjoy an adult beverage .... otherwise an assortment of jelly's is always appreciated as a thank you.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.
