Considering first Tesoro

Leaning between Vaquero, Deleon, and Tejon. Vaquero because of being able to ground balance, and I like the Deleon because of TID. Deleon doesn't have manual ground balance or a pinpoint button if I'm correct, but you PP by switching it into all metal. Can you PP the Vaquero by using the all metal position instead of holding down the PP button? The Tejon has the trigger, ground balance, but no TID.. Any thoughts and advice from those who own and operate these machines will be appreciated. I'm in Pa.

I swing a Vaquero and love it. You don't need a PP mode to pinpoint with a Tesoro. The ones I have pin point super fast and very accurately in the discriminate mode. The only time I use the pinpoint mode is to size a target a little more precisely. The Vaquero has good depth, is very stable and doesn't give a lot of false signals. Also it's super light and can be swung all day long. You can't go wrong with a Tesoro.

I use a Vaquero. I rarely use the pinpoint button on my machine. The manual ground balance really makes the Vaquero a deep hitter.

It also has an excellent recovery time. Here's a photo from today. These objects were only a foot apart yet each one registered a separate signal on a single sweep of the coil.

Can't go wrong with any of them, the V would be a good choice to start with.
The nice thing is you can usually find a nice used one at a really good price.

the vaquero seems to be a great choice, I'm using the Compadre and I love it

Cant go wrong with the Vaquero or Tejon! Get the best you can afford. Both have adjustable G.B.,a must in my opinion, both are super deep, Tejon is more flexible. Tesoros recovery speed is awesome! Good Luck!

I live in Southern California and the Vaquero is fine for here...definitely a DEEP hitter and easy to use. If I were living in the east where Civil Wars occurred, I'd be using the Tejon...deeper...hotter. They say that the Tejon can be a little chirpy or noisy but that's usually corrected my lowering the sensitivity a tad. For coin shooting I use an ACE 250 but for older houses, farms, etc it's the Vaquero! You'll never hear me say, "I used to have a Vaquero and now I regret selling it" Even if I get the Tejon, I'll still keep the Vaquero. What type of hunting are you planning to do....and what state do you live in?

Hey Gambler

I'm in PA myself (little south of the Burgh) and I use a Vaquero and Bandido. Both have manual GB. I've used detectors here that had a set GB and the depth just isn't the same.
Running into soil here with totally totally opposite flavors is not uncommon so I would say stay within the list of detectors that have the manual GB. The accuracy of pinpointing with a Tesoros is dead on crazy just X'n the target so don't worry if the machine has a pinpoint button. Heck the X'n will get you close enough to the target that once you push your pro pointer into the dirt it is going to sound right off right away unless the target is deep. I also believe you would be doing yourself a favor in the long run by getting a machine with no TID. I think a TID machine is like taking your significant other into the field with you. Do you really want your detector to talk you out of digging a good signal which is why you are out detecting to begin with? It is just guessing on deeper targets as the ID accuracy drops after so many inches. If you don't want to dig a certain type of item just turn up your disc. Once you have come to learn what your detector is telling you by sound I believe looking at a tiny little screen would be a PITA (pain in the a..) for every signal and takes up valuable detecting time. No matter what detector you use make sure you get one of the smaller coils to complement it.

Hope that helps.

If you are only going to have one detector, one with manual or true auto ground balance is a must in my opinion. That said, I hunt some areas where the soil is relatively mild and I've done pretty well there with several preset detectors. The problem is, if you set out to hunt an area that is way off for the preset, you don't have any easy recourse other than to either mess with the internal setting and risk doing damage or sending it in to the factory to have them make the adjustment and then, or course, it's no longer in adjustment for the areas where it was working before. Go for the Vaq or the Tejon, add a DeLeon, Cortez, or other, later. My two bits.
