considering an explorer.

i was thinking of getting a explorer. but i am being scared off by some who say that it is a hard detector to learn. what can be so hard to learn or adapt to. can anyone comment on any specifics that would make this detector hard to learn. also, any pros and cons of the detector. but i am more concerned with it being possibly hard to learn. thanks for any help.

pinpointing at first but after a couple times out It became very easy. I am in NO WAY profiecent with the XS but I have dug twice asd many Silver coins in 2 months than I did the year and a half before using 3 different models of another brand detector. I also dug my first CW Button, a Cast I! I really don't think any of the other machines would have touched it! It takes a little getting use to the sounds being use to the beeps of all the previous machines but after getting accustomed to the squeaks and squeels I wouldn't trade it for 3 top of the line detectors of another brand and never be able to own one again! As for learning the XS, there's not much difference than learning any other machine. Take it a little at a time. Don't go out the first trip and try to understand all the bells and whistles. They will come in due time. If You do get one try to find a hunting buddy with one and hunt toghter as much as possible. If You own another detector, LEAVE it somewhere unaccesible. Is it's available You will want to use it now and then and You'll never learn the XS. I too was worried that I was not going to like/learn it and the $$$ is alot of money to invest with that queasy feeling! I used a buddies before I bought and I still had my doubts but I had seen what he was finding and was tired of being skunked on the pounded sites we were hunting. It's more of a competition now! We place a small wager $1 for the oldest coin at each hunt. It equals out most of the time...lol. Also if You do buy one there are MANY PROS on this forum and others that will help You through any rough spots You may encounter!

Don't be afraid to buy an Explorer. I haven't even bothered to learn most of it but still I'm finding coins deeper than I did in the 5 years I had a Whites XLT. The manual is pretty good. I have not memorized the manual, but if I want to change something I find the page & make the adjustment before I go out. I haven't attempted to try a custom pattern but have used some disc & I just have been running manual sensitivity. haven't tried auto or semi-auto, & haven't even tried iron mask, I just avoid areas with lots of iron. I found a 6" deep wheat cent & a 7" deep clad quarter. Both had perfect consistent ID in heavily mineralized ground. So you don't have to know/learn much to do at least that good & I haven't had it to any real old places yet & have only had it out 10 times. The last time out I located every coin within my maybe 4" wide plugs without using a separate pinpointer, & many people say pinpointing is the hardest thing about this detector. I still don't dig nickels as I don't want the pulltabs & can't tell the difference, but that is a problem with almost any detector. Still I think I know enough to find silver if I just get out to some old places. HH, George (MN)

I think a lot of the people saying long learning curve havent even used one, or havent used it that long.. I dont know what people consider long learning curve, but suspect that it takes quite a while to get proficient with any machine, even the simplest.. if your gonna learn one.. learn with the best <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=""> I know that lots of XLT and DFX users seem to say the learning curve is longer, I just cant see how as there isnt a 10th of he adjustments to be made on the explorer.. most settings are simply user preferences and do not affect performance capabilities.. And once you got it set the way you liike it you dont have to adjust anything for any site if you dont want to, except maybe sensitivity

The explorer has found twice as much on the beach that I found with my other 4 machines. I have dug quarters 12 to 16-inches and a lighter at least 24 to 26-inches. The next best machine for depth on the beach did not detect them.
It a ring grabber also, I found a ring next to a poptop and it detected the ring.
Pennies will sometimes sound like a quarter if they are real deep and corroded.
GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
