Is the only difference in the two that the Conquistador runs at a slightly lower frequency
than the µMax?which one would handle emi better and which is the better of the two and why?

The older one is heavier.
you are referring to the 'original' Conquistador that was made by White's for the Ballenger's back in the late '60s and early '70s as it was one of those monster-weight, big blue-box detectors.

Otherwise, both the Tesoro Conquistador offerings, the Conquistador and Conquistador µMAX, were listed at the same weight of approximately 2.2 pounds.

Conquistador µMAX.

No, there are a few other differences. The slight frequency differences are not anything of major note anyway as far as performance is concerned.

Probably close to the same, and easily controllable with adjustment of the Sensitivity control. Tesoro detectors, as a rule, are not as prone to EMI issues as many of the more modern circuitry design detectors on the market, and between these two, if there was any noteworthy difference it might be seen (heard) with the Conquistador µMAX. However, those I have owned and used were no more of a problem with EMI than my Bandido II µMAX. Silver Sabre µMAX or Eldorado µMAX models that I have had and used in the same locations where EMI can be a challenge with other brand detector models.

I feel the better of the two is the Conquistador µMAX.

Why? Because it has a few design improvements that make it work much better than the 'original' Tesoro Conquistador. Those are:

1.. The long bat-like toggle trigger for Frequency Shift on the first Conquistador sometimes got damaged, even to include man-caused damage by pulling too hard on the trigger, so relocating it was a marked improvement.

2.. The Conquistador µMAX had some improvements in circuitry design that seemed to enhance the mid-depth target response and, I felt, that of those models I compared, the µMAX version seemed to have a little improved depth and performance.

3.. Of primary improvement was how they dealt with the Discrimination/Ground Balance glitch of the first Conquistador version. It had the same problem I have noted in the Sidewinder µMAX and another model or two, where adjusting the Discrimination level also shifted the Ground Balance setting! That was terrible and, depending upon where the Disc. control was set and how the internal GB trimmer was set, changing the Discrimination, increasing or decreasing, could shift the GB setting to cause falsing from being too negative, to having a too-positive GB and the detector not being able to respond to a silver half or big silver dollar. Sometimes not even a quarter would cause a positive response.

So, if you are shopping and come across one of each, go for the Conquistador µMAX. I prefer to have more manual control of my detectors, especially control of the Ground Balance setting, but there have been a few, two or three, of the preset GB models (turn-on-and-go) that I liked, and one of them was the Conquistador µMAX.
