Confusing reading on Whites Eagle Spectrun

I have just started using the Whites Eagle Spectrum and have noticed that some targets read really strange. This is just an example. I may get a reading on the meter that is normal for a dime or quarter, even in size when I go to pinpoint and the meter will max out like it is on the surface, the depth reading goes all the way across the graph, but does not "overload". The problem is, the target is really deep and large. I can tell this because I can lift the loop up about 2 feet above the target and still get a strong reading. What causes this, and why doesn't the depth meter show it to be deep instead of right on the surface? I'm getting used to it now but I would like any input on this. One last thing, this is mostly in parks so I can't dig huge holes to recover whatever it is....at least not in the daylight.

The depth meter is really a signal strength meter and is based on coin sized targets and the 9.5 coil. On other sized targets and with other coils it won't read correct. Rob

That is what I was thinking, if it's such a big target, and combined with the halo effect, the meter would be reading it all wrong. That is why I was raising the loop about 2' off the ground to still check for signal. Thanks for confirming my thoughts.

My first thought would dig it and see. It's probably a beer or soda can, maybe a sprinkler head. HH,Jerry(in Madera)
