Confused

I'm a little confused, as on the Explorer we have audio gain and deep. From what I read, it seems like they both do the same thing. What is the advantage on which one over the other? I don't like to sound dumb, but maybe I am, as I just don't quite understand this. Or maybe I'm getting old, just turned 71.

Audio gain will increase the amplitude of all signals that are presented to the audio circuits. Deep will place emphasis only on faint signals. It will not increase the amplitude of a strong target as and example. Audio gain will increase both faint and strong signals. This is about as far as Minelab has gone into the Deep function. However, the only problem with Deep is the catch 22 that it will also increase emphais on shallow faint targets. I almost never use Deep in trashy areas as I noticed the little tiny specks of aluminum trash start to give pecking sounds. I do use it in clearner ground looking for ultra deep faint targets.
So, audio gain is like overall preamplifier gain and deep is audio amplifier emphasis on faint or weak sounds.
Hope this helps,
Cody
