I am in the process of purchasing a new detector. But I don't know which one is the best for me.I need a detector for coins and rings . I own 2 older detectors, a 5000d and a 6000 series 2. I have been away from the hobby for about 9yrs. Every manufacturer says that they have the best. So should I purchase Whites MXT,XLT,DFX. FISHER CZ-3D,Coinstrike. Garrett GTI 2500. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Scott,
All you need is the MXT, It is simple to use, cost less than alot of other machines , it is verastile , a 3 in one detector. It has a wide range of coils. The mxt (arguably) will get just as deep as most other machines out there. I got a 5 inch coil for mine that will hit coins at a soilid 6 inches. I think anyone on this forum will tell you if you try the mxt you will love it. Some of our biggest disagreements pertain to coils, I have a 14 and a 5 inch "after market" coil that kick the crao outta the stock coils but that's another story. I had a fisher and heard from a couple dealers that most all fishers are iron crazy, minelabs are good, may get a little deeper ( I'd hafta see it) and they are complicated to learn. There are a lot more out there but I never really liked having something that I didn't know how to pronounce the name. For the money you wil;l find the MXT very hard to beat. In fact regaurdless of price it is a top of the line machine.

I have tested several detectors in the past two years of detecting and none impressed me as much as the MXT. I use it on every where I can hunt, I origianlly started out using my uncles fisher, I then bought an IDX Pro after testing several others that a local salesman had. When I tried the MXT I was hooked. I will not part with My MXT for anything... the only other detector I would even think about getting for a secondary would be a DFX. I use a 5", 9.5 standard coil, Big Foot, and have just recently gotten an 18" Excelerator coil which I am now just starting to use.
You can use this on inland ground, rocky area for prospecting or on a sandy beach. You can't beat the MXT for a beginning detector or as one with a background like you having used other detectors.

I am a Minelab person myself, but the MXT is the most impressive Whites i have ever used and accualy put the fun back into detecting for me. I found I can tell my targets better as ID is excellent, the depth is excellent and it is so easy to use and not a bunch of programing to do.
The MXT is my wifes detector, but I use it when I can and find that I do very good with it compared to the XLT, the Garretts and the Fishers I have used before. I never tried the DFX, but it has to be programed to do good while the MXT is more of a turn on a go machine that will do Excellent.

Hi Scott, This is another Scott here, if you have used those other whites machines then you probably know that whites are good machines. I seem to have gone full circle as far as detectors go since I started with one of the old blue box whites that I bought for fifty bucks second hand in the late 70's. I have a tesoro bandido II and a Classic ID And MY latest is the MXT. The Classic ID was a great introduction to ID machines and it took me a while to really like it. Now I have the MXT and though it is still new to me, I have come to see that it is one heck of a machine for the money with many options available such as the sunray probe and coils. If you are looking for a do it all machine in the middle price range that gives top end performance then I think you would be happy with the MXT. Thanks for the info. You guys are great! I'll get back with you all after i recieve my MXT.

Comments on the DFX and then the MXT
The DFX has a very high learning curve that involves menus and an understanding of the various components involved in how VLF detectors and their coils operate. I can be programmed to adapt to pretty much any ground conditions on the face of the planet. I've had it for over a year now, and while I really enjoy it, it has taken me that long to understand it since I got it as a newbie.
The DFX is NOT designed for the beginner or casual detectorist nor for those who have no interest in tweaking their machine past factory pre-sets for optimal performance! While it can be used quite capably right out of the box, it was designed to be custom programmed to run in whatever ground or hunting conditions are presented to the detectorist at that moment. It was engineered for those who wish to understand how to do such programming and why they are changing settings. Actual programming setups are almost, mathematically, infinite!

My wife had NO interest whatsoever in understanding ANYTHING about the 'hows' or 'whys'...she just wanted the "WHATS" (what's down there!). Right out of the box Shelley was keeping up with me and the DFX and even beating me out in certain respects.
I know NOTHING really about the other detectors except that Minelabs are considered to be rather heavy and awkward, physically, to use. I also have heard that they have a lot of plastic and often need repairs.
I HAVE noticed THIS though. Compared to ANY other mid to high range detectors be sold second-hand on forums and on E-Bay, the MXT is, by FAR, the lowest re-selling detector available out there. The owners just don't seem to want to get rid of it or trade it away! THAT, to me, is REALLY saying something!
The MXT is one detector that is easy to use, has several different coils to help you with your search under highly differing ground and hunt conditions and it WILL find the goodies - as you can see them being posted by those that have learned to put up with a little noise and use it to their advantage.
The MXT is, without a doubt, the best potential multi-dimensional, deep seeking and information giving (read powerfully "noisy") mid-range detector on the market, bar none!
Hope this, at least, helps you to narrow down your choices.
Ya'll Pass a Good Time!

Thanx Art, My wife keeps telling me I'll have to wait till my icome tax refund gets here to purchase my machine. A friend wants to buy my old 6000 series2 , how much do you think I should charge? Still works great. 60.00 too much?
