CONFUSED!!

I have owned a Fisher CZ-20 for around 6 years with a 10" coil. As most everyone knows, it recenty was upgraded to a CZ-21. I have done quite well with it if you read my signature.

I am trying to get my wife to try detecting and I didn't want her to use my other CZ-21 when it comes back from 1st Texas because it also has a 10" coil and she is quite small.

A friend found me another CZ-20 with an 8" coil for 350.00. I snatched it up!! It came in the mail yesterday and I went to my local park to try it. This park is right down the road from my house and I have hunted it to death. Very small. You can't even get a signal in the swim area. (well I couldn't!!)

I got out of my car and threw 85 cents in the water. I then got on my scuba gear and went in. This machine suprized the heck out of me. I was getting signals I never heard with my other unit. I dug 2 pull tab rings that were over 12" down. I was ALWAYS told the 10" loop was deeper. Now I am very confused as the subject goes. I was also picking up very small aluminum that my machine never hit on.

I plan on going back today. My idea is using the 8 inch coil and going over the swim area and marking any targets I get. Then going back with the 10" coil to make sure my observations are correct. I really know they are though. I am just confused as to why.

...for me...even in reasonable visability, it is still hard for me to remain strictly oriented while submerged. Of course, the less vis you have the less oriented I become. Not that I care too much, but last week-end with just 4-6" vis, there was no way I could attain any type of search pattern.

Stacy says, "Nobody get's it all." With scuba/hoohah I just don't see how one can cover the ground as if you are hunting on dry ground. It's the nature of the beast.

I have an 8" excal and got it because I didn't want the water resistance of the 10" coil. I believe that the 8" coil has the capacity to keep me "in the park" of a 10" coil. It will just take me a little longer to cover the same amount of territory.

I used Fisher land detectors in the 80's (555 vlf) and had separate coils for it. Personally I couldn't find where the 10" was deeper than the 8" to any real degree. Maybe it was 10% deeper. But I dig PLENTY deep with the 8"coils.

Your new acquistion could be a super-tuned fluke--all to your advantage. 350? What a deal!

Enjoy and as you try to cover all the submerged territory, you are gonna find a ton of loot! So be sure and continue to share, buddy Bob! Lookin' forward to your next post. <><

Don't know, but we did a comparison between a CZ20/10 and a 8" model in a local shop one time and the 8" was more sensitive. I have the 10" which I like for greater coverage. Sounds like you got a super deal on the detector.

I just need to state that I have found that even with a small difference of 2 inches the smaller coil sees more due to less targets seen at one moment...and even with a 5" coil it sees more than the 8" coil.....it just takes longer.....How old are you Bob?.....Do you have that much time?.......I am talking land hunting but whats the difference?......I know a matter of 1 or 2 inch difference in coil sizes makes a big difference. Depth does play a role.....but I have dug some deep stuff with an 8" coil.....not so with 5" coil but man the stuff I missed with the 8 " is freaky.....

Hey, I am only 51. I have all the time left that the Lord is going to give me!!! My wife is still getting the smaller coil. Maybe she can outhunt me with it!!!! She can clean up the deeper stuff after I get rid of all the junk!!!

Hopefully with the hookah this weekend she might try. Will know tomorrow. If not!! Off to the deeper water I go!!

Good luck this weekend everyone. And to all you fathers. Enjoy your day!!!
