Confused, need help with vanishing signals?

I have been experiencing a very confusing & frustrating situation lately. I have been hunting with my Excal11 & my HHPI and get what sounds like good signals only to dig & dig and find nothing in the scoop & the signals getting weaker or disappear altogether. Then suddenly I will dig a ring or a nail etc. I can't tell a difference or explain what is going on? The signals sound the same, but the results are different. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

One, The item your digging goes deeper beyond your coils reach.

Two The itrem is actually a piece of junk and once you break the halo effect the item no longer registers as good.

Three You are chasing a pulltab or light piece of alunimum that loves to dance with the surf and pull the dissapearing act.

Four In trying to dig the object you place it closer to a piece of iron and that kills your signal

Five, I fish saw what you were after and decided it wanted it more than you did

Well maybe not number 5 but this is just some of the reasons good signals vanish.

Ive chased sinkers...small split shots, that fall back into the hole or end up as shake!!

foil and tiny objects that slip thru the scoop holes drive me crazy too...... i might suggest taking only 1 or 2 inches of sand off of target at a time thay way if its something like a stud earing or tiny target you are less likely to totally loose the signal.... i hunt a lake that has its fair share of foil bits...when ever i get a signal i rub my coil over the target several times while appling light pressure...if the target seem to move about with every swing then i know its a piece of foil....if the target sound gets more pronounced while massaging the sand with the coil and stays in one place then i know this is a denser target worth investigating further.... this lake i hunt has a section that tends to give me some chatter and i dont know why either.... get tiny chirp, swing coil back over-nothing.... but from working that lake so many times i now know the difference between chatter and a target.....also if your sensetivity is too high you are more prone to fantom signals....

Therover's #5 could be true too. Couple years back there was an article in the news about a bass that was caught; and when cleaned for dinner, it had a nice big old class ring in it's belly.
