Confederate Rosette?

Keith (Indiana)

New member
I found one back in the late 70's while I was living in TN that I traded to a friend for a silver dollar. I had no idea what it was at the time. It was about the size of a half dollar and had a five point star inside if I remember right. It was brass. Anyone ever see one like that? My friend said it was a confederate rosette and said he sold it for $400 quite a few years back.

Hi Keith; if it had a lead fill back on it, with remnants of iron or brass loops/studs, it was most likely a rosette. If it were stamped brass it could be a rosette or other horse Boss tack. It would most likely predate the Civil War and be a Milita item; which the South implemented into use. Although associated with Texas and Mississippi; truth is the star was a favorite design of Milita units and civilians. If it had come from a camp, direct association would be affirmative. Thanks for the info David. I do not remember any attachment on it but it has been over 20 years since I have seen it. I didn't hunt any camps that I am aware of altough I did hunt a few college campuses in middle TN and one high school yard that was a hospital site during the CW. I don't remember specifically where I found it unfortunately! I kept GREAT records on coins and gold but not on relics...............
