Confederate Blanket Roll Buckle?

Deno

New member
I don't know where I found this or with what machine, I was looking thru a copy of Francis A. Lord Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia & thought I have one of those. It ID's it as a Confederate
blanket roll buckle. I have a hunting buddy that is sharp on this sort of thing & he thinks it was on a harness. Regardless is it Confederate?

Probably not. It has been reported that these buckles are tack/harness related and most likely Union. Nice find though!

Like the brass tent rope tightners, these buckles are available today in harness shops and there is no way to determine if they are CW period or not. They are harness buckle covers. The part about being Confederate I believe is completely bogus.

Deno, they are buckle covers designed for horse tack, but they have shown up in association with infantry, and we only assume they were used with blanket buckle covers. Although a decorative item, their purpose was to prevent brush and limbs from snagging in the bridle buckle or other tack buckles. They have been found in numerous CS and US camps, even into the Indian Wars period. They are pre-civil war. GH, David@Dixie
