conductivity vs ferrous

Will all targets be displayed in the same location on the smart screen in either cond. or ferrous? Is the only different, that pitch increases along the horizontally axis in ferrous and the vertical axis in cond.? If so,is it easier to tell iron from good targets in ferrous?

It's easier in that Iron comes in with that low tone when in ferrous mode and you actually hear it instead of having it null out, that in contrast to hearing the high pitched tones makes quite a difference.
The targets will be displayed in the same locations in either Conduct or Ferrous.
Conduct mode tones only increase or decrease along the vertical, and then will only null out as they come within a rejected area on the screen.
Conduct mode tones along the horizontal remain the same unless they also come within a rejected area.
I have mentioned that with respect to the Recovery speeds that IF the Explorer really does recover faster from an ID than from a reject then running ferrous or very low Iron mask would be hands down the only way to run your detector, but no one has spoken to this possibility and I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. I do tend to lean towards a quicker recovery in ID the reject but am not positive.

Thanks Mitch for the insight. Another question, would beach hunting for gold be easier in ferrous with no iron mask? Would you disc.out coins or would that effect depth for gold items.

Gary, I would not disc out anything at the beach and would run as low in iron mask as possible, no more than a minus 8. The smaller gold for some reason likes to show up on the lower left side for some reason so if accepting as much gold as you can on the screen then you have to accept more of the left screen.
Gold rings can run as high as zinc penny so that sort of makes accepting everything important so I would still run Iron mask as low as I can without rejecting the rest of the screen. You will know when iron mask is set too low because of the constant high pitched iron tones, in ferrous mode you will be getting all the low tone iron signals instead of the null, but some of the high pitch iron tones will still come through also. At a cleaner beach running in ferrous mode may be okay, but at the trashier Iron loaded beaches I would probably favor Conduct mode. At one beach I was able to run iron mask at a -12 with no problem, there I would say it was a toss-up between Ferrous and Conduct mode because the beach was fairly clean, unfortunatly it was too clean <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
There may be some gold that actually reads like iron, but unless your at a cleaner low iron site you would be digging iron all day when if you stuck with the ordinary low conductive signals the chances of hitting a goldie would go way up. Ya know if your 10 minutes away from the beach then you probably can dig everything including some of the iron because you have unlimited time to pound a particular beach, but if time is of the essence then going for the high probability gold will prove more productive. Of course there is always that lucky find too where setting mean nothing.
Hope this helps a bit, hopefully some of the more experienced beach hunters will add to this. GL/HH
