Conductive iron readings???

cdsmith46

Well, I have found out the hard way that small, old, rusty iron can become conductive enough to give a signal that sounds high. It seems that when I looked at my meter, it was also registering in the upper range. Any suggestions at all? I am not asking for perfection, and if I have to live with this, so be it.

Chuck,

The only time I have had false readings with rusty iron nails is when they are curved. Enough curve and they sound off just like bullets (32/34 with a high "flutey" tone).

At the last DIV event I was on a hill that was pretty much made of rust, orange red dirt that masked everything. At one point I had just gotten a really solid "button" signal (flutey tone and a repeatable 12) when a gent with a minelab 4500 PI machine walked over. Because I was having a hard time with false signals on that hill I asked him to check the target before I dug. He responded "Looks like you have a button there!". As I started to dig he walked a few feet away and called back to me "I got one too!". We both dug our targets, I got a bent square nail and he got a straight one

In defense of the Safari, on that hill no machine worked properly and everyone had to dig every signal.
