Concentric or widescan? What size?

Davethejunky

TROLL #2
Thinking about getting another coil for my Vaquero and need input on either. I coin hunt in parks and old ball fields. Soil is good here in Minnesota.

I have the 10X12 DD coil and it is great for hunting wide open areas but not great in trashy areas with lots of pop tops, because they usually don't disc out and sound pretty good like dimes or quarters.
The long scanning field makes you think you are not missing much and you don't, but the disc is not quite as sharp as a concentric...common on all DD's from any brand.
In bad soil DD's can handle the soil slightly better, in good soil concentric actually go a bit deeper but you need to overlap closer.

In trashy areas my favorite coil to use is the small 5.75" concentric...and my usual hunting sites are public parks especially around picnic areas and basketball and volleyball courts because I am always looking for jewelry.
These are the most trashiest areas you will usually come across out there.
The small concentric is also very good in heavy iron infested sites.
Surprisingly deep, disc is sharp, pop tops aren't a problem because they usually disc out, target separation is excellent.
I also believe the smaller coil makes my Vaq a bit more sensitive to small targets like micro jewelry...not quite but pretty close to the the sensitivity of my Compadre which is a very good thing.

In good soil the concentric is my choice and I think ID better in type of trash you will encounter in those places you mentioned hunting. My favorite size is the 5.75.

Looks like I know what I'm getting then. 5.75 concentric seems weapon of choice with most on this forum.

I have had a couple of Vaqueros in the past but don't now, however I used the same coil choices as I do with my current Tesoro's and those I've been using over 32 years ... smaller-than-stock and preferably a Concentric type.

I used to use the 7" Concentric the most and still have it for my 'original' Bandido, and both my Silver Sabre microMAX and Bandido II microMAX wear the 6" Concentric coil (Tesoro labels them 5.75) because the smaller coils handle most sites quite well. Especially considering that so many Coin Hunting sites are also plagued with an ample supply of discarded trash. I prefer a Concentric coil most of the time because they generally can Discriminate better, Pinpoint easier, and provide slightly better depth than a similar-size Double-D coil.

These days i mainly use the 7'' Concentric on my UK version of the Bandido, main use is on trashy roman/saxon sites as the Tesoro/Concentric coil combination is well renown for its discrimination ability.Had a hard job locating the 7'' coil as they are rare to find a decent one, mine was a very rare find as it was brand new also the added bonus was i did not pay a premium for it either.Right place at the right time springs to mind.

you have Vaquero, and the soil is mild , > Then stay with the stock coil only exemption is in the thrashy spots use the 6" concentric

My first Tesoro was the original Silver Saber with 7 inch coil, bought it the week it came out and had fantastic finds including a 1917 half that was a repeatable tick for a signal had to be at least 8 inches if I remember right. I think my stock coil along with the 5.75 concentric will be a lethal combo.

I would have to say 5.75 concentric :lmfao: just to add to the votes, not that there is anything wrong with DD coils I use those also.

5.75 concentric is my favorite coil also. It's not too large and not too small. It separates well and the discrimination seems more accurate.

By the way, for me the small sniper was and still is very lucky.
Your mileage may vary, but I never discount luck in this business.
I put this used thing on after receiving one as a gift from a very generous member on another forum for some advice I was giving him and went a hunting.
It was pretty cool, deeper than I would have dreamed possible and very responsive.
I happened to wander into a large wide open area at a school I was hunting, a place I had scanned before using other detectors and coils many times, and I came across this thing.
Huge area, small coil and a super solid repeating signal.
Pure luck...and I will take all of that I can get.

Whatever size you choose I stick with a concentric in your mild soil.

Ok, I ordered the 5.75 concentric and a 10x12 sef just to try. As long as I had the credit card out I bought a new Propointer, and Grey Ghost NDT,s. Any input on the SEF would be welcomed.

I use a SEF12x10 coil and it is a very good coil for deeper non trashy sites like say pasture and ploughed and rolled sites but i dont use one on a Tesoro machine, would it have been my coil of choice for parks and sports fields like you use your detector,my reply would be i doubt that i would have bought one for that type of detecting.

Coin Hunting in parks, old ball fields, and other popular-use Coin Hunting type activity sites means you'll encounter metal structures and/or trash. Sometimes, the trash level can be abundant, and the 6" coil (Tesoro's 5.75 label) is a great coil for working in and around those typical conditions. Matter of fact, I keep a 6" Concentric on my Bandido II µMAX, I also have one on my Silver Sabre µMAX. I opted to use the 7" coils on my Silver Sabre II and Bandido II, and I do keep the standard 8" open-center stock coil on my original Bandido for a little more coverage in sites that have a reduced amount of c lose-proximity targets.

Personally, for 'typical' urban Coin Hunting sites, I would not have invested in the 10X12 SEF because there are usually too many closely-spaced, shallower coins for the bigger coils to be very efficient. As a rule, I have found the standard 8" "donut" coils or the 8X9 'Out-Of-Round' 'OOR' Concentric coils to produce ample in-the-field results for extra coverage and a little better detection depth. A little, and usually enough to make a difference in many sites that have some potential for slightly deeper smaller-size targets.

Bigger coils are okay picks for bigger-size targets in bigger-sized and open areas, but for more fun applications as well as junky sites, smaller-size coils are the better choices. Just my opinions.

Ok, I understand about the larger Widescan coils. I do every so often hit a farm field where a horse race track was a long time ago. The SEF will work well in situations like that?

By the way... I am really impressed with the amount of knowledge on this forum, thank you.

When I was ordering I was thinking that sometimes I hunt farm fields that had had horse racing tracks in the past and the SEF would be good for those areas.

Don't worry about your SEF. First off it's not that big of a coil and you WILL find a few spots where you'll be damned glad you have it in your bag of tricks. For instance.....I have a certain church in the big city that I visit on occaision if and when I venture into the big city for a hunt. The place has been hit by the locals for years so there is no shallow coins except a few newer junk clad crap. On the other hand, the place has very little trash so I hunt it with my 13" Ultimate and have recovered 6 silvers (barbers mostly) that were DEEP with half of them on edge also. The big DD coils get that little extra depth and are better on the on edge deeper stuff. Basically just got a little deeper than the rest of the boys got. Next time I hit it I'll try and concentrate on the Indians and nickels......as I was focused on silver my first two visits there.
