Concentric coils:confused:

I was just wondering how many guys are using the 950 coil on a regular basis instead of the D2. I know the 950 can be quieter and in some soil can be deeper. So if you are:
1. Why?
2. What part of the country are you hunting?

ive been using my super 12all the time since ive got it a couple months ago. it just seems to find more and faster. if theres a lot of trash its tough but ive gone over places ive pounded with the dd an 6x10 and found things i missed that werent that much deeper or even shallower. there,s no doubt i couldve just missed them because i cant believe those 2 coils wouldnt have found them. but ive found it to be quite around the power lines and dead on on the pinpoint. the fact that it covers ground quick and has the ability to see a little deeper keeps me swingin it. once you get used to the weight its not bad. not sayin i would want to swing it for 4-6hr hunt. but i like it for sure.

I've been using the 950 in wide parking strips with high EMI overhead and in hotrock playgrounds. I know the DD's are the latest and do have a very important place but they lack in some situations. Beware of an unwarranted prejudice towards a blanket policy of DD being "best"........ Be nice if someone like Carl could weigh in here...if he can exain half as well as he did in explaining, as he did while heading up the writing of that VX3 manual...that was a nice job Whites!!! I was trying to see which part of the country favored concentric coils. That's why I asked where you where using them.

On my MXT and MXT Pro I use concentric search coils because of their easy pinpointing and more accurate target identification of rusting iron. Using a DD coil on an MXT can keep a person busy digging rusty crown caps and nails at many of my search sites.

Using a V3 / V3i the coil choice is less clear since they have a bottle cap reject adjustment and their 3 frequency pinpointing will usually reveal iron. However, along parkways with buried or overhead utilities and at the beach I prefer the quieter operation of a concentric coil.

My search sites are primarily parks, schools and beaches of Ventura County, CA. Some of my inland sites and many of the local beaches contain lots of black sand.

Dirt here in the Pacific NW tends to run moderate to high moderate (on average). Beyond that, cultivated land or wooded you can mostly run close to full gains but an exception is tight in to river's with narrow flood plains....nasty.

So much of our dirt is basically volcanic. Once you add to that heavy organic build and heavy run off patterns.........all these conditions can mix in a banded patterns so areas side by side can have both extremes. (Geologically our dirt is new and not as blended.) Lower areas, where most of our population is, tends to not be lower mineralization with nasty pockets of mineralization here and there.

OK, two areas were the VX3 and concentric coil might be a good combo, Ventura County, CA. and Pacific NW. I also saw where George posted that the combo worked good in Florida. I remember Monte likes the 5.3 concentric in the NW also.

Well, Here in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles concentric coils rule. Our minerals are moderate to lite and even as far North as Kansas. For residential hunting I use the 5.3 and 9.5. The 10" DD and BC reject here are a waste of time! I always have several different coils with me for various mineral situations. When I hunt in Colorado, I use either the 4x6 shooter or 10"DD for prospecting and residential Denver hunts.
The Eastern half of N M will tolerate concentric coils pretty well and the only time I have had any problems with GB was in the lava bed areas, but still managed to make it work. I hunt in a variety of states and try to have coils that will work wherever I am. I use mostly Whites and have been involved with the V's since they came out in Longview two+ years ago. My new VX3 is still in the box and will be until the heat breaks. We are currently at 109 degrees and have been over 100 for two weeks.

Hello V3i owners....new to forum, new to hobby, name is bob
I just cancelled the order for the super 12 just before I saw your post because they could not get one in. (back ordered and its been weeks) now i'm wishing I waited longer but instead I took what they had in stock today for a second V rated coil and that was the eclipse DD 6x10. If the 12 is really that nice I will have to get one someday somewhere as I wanted it to use on the beach. Thanks for the input on the super 12 though I appreciate it... now what to do with this eclipse

btw V3i is FUN! can't say I understand all thats going on with the machine yet but I get about 90% of it and I can install and restore programs easy enough. If i had a question about V3i today it might be how will the stock DD coil compare to the weird looking eclipse and will it find some usefulness for me. I do see V3i has a menu feature that I will switch for the different V rated coils, thats nice to know it's tuned to maximum compatibility. So where do you guys find use for the eclipse?

have a great day

It was intended to give good coverage (10") and good side by side separation. It should get the depth of a 6" coil. Oval coils get the depth of the smaller side of the coil. It is a great park coil where it is a little trashy. I use it for cladding and jewelry hunting where I don't need the depth of the D2.

For the beach hunting the 950 and 12" concentric coils are the coils of choice.

Ive been using it lately because I wanted to compare it to the D2 with regards to noise. It is quieter, and depth is real good too, however the separation isnt as good as the D2.
Dont underestimate the power of a concentric coil, it may perform better in higher EMI areas too.

The 6x10 was my second coil purchased and is my second most used coil. You may have just done the right thing but if you do detecting that covers large areas quick...the 12 is a real nice coil to have down the road. I haven't really dug much deep stuff with it but coverage was my goal.

Nope, I have a 5.3 and it says home and I may eventually sell it. The 10" DD and 4X6 are my weapons of choice in this horrible Cali soil. There must be a ton of copper in this soil too because every coin I dig is the color of central Virginia clay and hard to clean short of a wire brush . (Yeah, I'm a displaced Va boy)

I am thinking about taking the 5.3 with me on a trip to Virginia in August, but I have done so well with the 4X6 and 10 DD I may just leave it home. Any thoughts???

Concentric loops like the 5.3 have the following advantages:
Can get good targets under bad targets because of their cone shaped field
They are 10% quieter regarding magnetic interference from power lines
They have 10% better trash discrimination on iron - steel bottle caps and foil
They can shape the target without walking around it
They pin point accurately

Wide Scan Loops (DD) like the 6x10 and D2 have the following advantages:
They have better side by side target separation.
They are more sensitive to smaller than coin size targets.
They are more sensitive off the tip area of the coil.
They smooth out the ground reactivity noise by 10%.

Aftermarket loops not specifically made for V3 will struggle a bit, especially at 22.5 kHz, both with gain setting and with VDI accuracy. Even so, I've found the aftermarket loops I've tried -- Bigfoot, SEF, and Sunray -- to be very usable.

You know, this is exactly why I tune in here!! :clapping: I have only had my V3+i for a little more than a month and I feel like I have owned it for more than a year because the volumes of information I get right here. Thank you sir for taking the time to inform me of the benefits of these coils. Granted I have only tried the 5.3 twice, but it sounds like I should at the very least take it to Va in August and then work more with it here in Cali. I know I will be working in wide open , but trashy areas in Va so I will not need the access the 4X6 affords. But I will need the discrimination it offers!!

I for one hate, hate, hate Bigfoot coils and I am talking about that thing that looks like a wide yardstick. I went to a club hunt last month and took 2 detectors a GTI 2500 and a XLT. Both detectors went insane when a detector fitted with a Bigfoot got anywhere near them and I was not alone. Those things qualify as an EMP blast in my humble opinion and changing detector channels or offsetting frequencies made no difference. They are just noisy. I am sure the folks using them loved them because it was a competition. They could find targets and block others with their "random" emissions at the same time. :ranting: I just started telling them to just get away from me after a while and I saw other folks do the same. It was rude really and I have noticed they are getting difficult to find...... Not sure of the actual reason, but not playing well with others seems to be a good reason they may be extinct to me.

I would guess the people had their gain turned up and it wasn't the case of the coil being the problem. I have hunted next to Bigfoot coils and had no trouble. They are hard to fine because the maker died so they are no longer being made.

I don't want this to appear like I am arguing with you because I am not and would not. You are gold as far as I am concerned, but......

There were 4 people I saw with Bigfoots. I had honestly only seen one prior to that day. One hunter had one on what looked like an original Fisher Gold Bug and I don't recall a gain on my old bug when I had it. There were 2 people with what looked like Ace 250's and I don't think they have gain either but I ahve never used one to say for sure. But the last was on what I think was an XLT and it does have gain. I was never near the XLT, but the 250's and the lady with the Fisher were all over the place like roaches. :heh: One guy was literally running with his detector during a competition hunt it was too funny for words. Leo Aranza (you have no doubt seen his 100's of youtube videos) was in line beside me with an etrac at the beginning of the last hunting event of the day. His machine freaked out like mine when a Bigfoot hunter walked by with their machine turned on just before they got in line. It may also be possible these coils were just old, abused, and leaking RF but it was very bad and I do mean 6 to 10 feet away too.

Let's stay on the subject of concentric coils and the V3/VX. Noisy Bigfoot users belongs on another forum altogether.

This is the nature of conversation - they wander from time to time. But I will refrain from posting since I spoke to the concentric post and now I am done. :throw:
