Competition Hunts

Hello All.

I need some input. I am planning on entering competition hunts and would like some input on detector performance during competition hunts.

Two Questions:
1) What detector model and brand receives no interference of chatter from other detectors during a competition hunt?

Or

2) What detector model and brand may receive some interference or chatter but functions well enough to be successful during a competition hunt?

If you have knowledge about detector performance during competition hunts and would like to share - please answer this add or e-mail me direct @ leewiese@excite.com

Thanks

I have tried several over the years and do OK, but not as good as some as you have to be fast at retrieving the target and get back swinging again. The last one I used I like probably the best as I got no interference or very little and was able to swing the coil as fast as i wanted too. I used the new Fisher F-4 with the 8 inch coil as it was light and easy to swing. I tried a Tesoro Cibola once and it too did OK plus a Shadow X5 which too was good, but the X3 was faster for this type of hunting like the X5 worked better for coin and relic hunting.I got a Fisher F-2 now also and may try it on the next hunt in the spring as if it is as fast as the F-4 it will be a good detector for competition hunting plus a very low price too.

I know there are some great people on here....and also I do not comp. hunt.but in my first thought about this question is ....Why in Sam hell would anyone want to help the competition?????.......:poke:....just poking ya with a little fun......but don't expect any help from your home state......

I got my boys an F2 for Christmas and thought about using it in a hunt I go to every Fall. I use a CZ-6a but it gets a little heavy using a rapid swing all day. The F2 is light and it has a quick response so even swinging like a madman it shouldn't miss any of the targets since they're only an inch or two deep. Not sure how interference will affect it. I've had little trouble with interference with the CZ at the hunt.

My first hunt I used my Garrett GTA 1000 PM... no problem with interference noted by me, but one fellow with a Fisher said that my machine gave his fits. My current favorite is a Freedom Ace Plus with a 6.5" X 9" ProFormance coil attached... used it on the last three hunts. No interference, quick response and pinpointing as well.

A lot of folks seem to do well with Tesoros as well, but I have yet to use one of mine at a comp hunt, so I can't comment from a position of experience on the Tesoros.

You don't really need TID for comp-hunts, just a fast swinging, quick pin pointing rig that will bang good and loud on shallow silver and tokens.

Good luck if you ever get to try a comp-hunt, they are really alot of fun!

The Troy X5 is great for competition hunts. Its light at 2.5 pounds and can be swung fast at 19.3 kHz it has a toggle switch to move up or down a frequency so as not to get interference from other machines. I also have 40 other machines so no brand loyalty here. Dan

I have been doing competition hunts since 1978. The x3 or x5 would be hard to beat. Light. and pin points very good for fast recovery. Also has very fast recovery speed. Also almost any Tesoro as their frequency drifts on purpose . My overall favorite is the Tesoro Silver Sabre.....Jack

I used a Cibola and switched to a CZ7A after the first hunt the CZ worked very well.A gal that parked next to me at the hunt had a broken rod asm on her Prizm and I let her take the Cibola in the last two hunts on that days competition hunt she didn't do well with the Cibola either. My favorite competition unit the 1236x.

Ron, I think the Silver Sabre and the Silver uMax yield faster recoveries than the Cibola. I can't compare to the 1236x. I haven't used it.

Have you used the Silver? If you have, what is your opinion?

Cheers,

Taddog,I had a Silver and liked it.I picked up the Cibola for the comp hunts, and I think you are right the Silver was faster.I also was told a Compadra would do well in these hunts

You need a light machine that pinpoints quickly and for years the 1235X was King when I did these hunts years ago. Remember its not about depth but speed..About the interference problem some units can change frequencies and also add on's are also made to do the same thing which would help. Tough question to answer as I guess it all depends what freq. machines are in your area of hunt..If you see someone with the old red Big Bud Pro stay clear as it drives most units crazy..
