Competition Hunting with a Compadre

How well does the Compadre perform in competition hunting? What model would be better?

If you're referring to planted coin hunts, it' a good choice IMHO. Machines with a switchable frequency may be a bit better as far as crosstalk is concerned, but otherwise the Compadre is just fine as it's light and quick to respond and easy to pinpoint with.

Works great for hunts, try to find an older one with the 7" coil, it will cover more ground...............MO

Mine does great in my regular hunts and sometimes I fly at competition speeds. I practice at learning the size of the target on a slower second sweep and "spot" pinpointing on this same sweep. Coin sized objects give a "normal" duration sound. Tiny foil, etc. give a quick and short duration sound.

Stock coil may be a disadvantage due to coverage so might use a larger coil...Tesoro models are fast units and pinpoint well which is a plus but all of them have a close frequency so crosstalk could be a problem in a hunt with many Tesoro models being used..

I used one at a comp hunt years ago and I wiped the floor with it! Just crank up the disc. to the coin range and rock and roll. If there is a fence stay close to that. They love to plant good stuff there because most detectors can't get close like the Compadre. I walked away with 125 silver dimes,12 silver quarters, 2 halves and 2 silver rounds I won from detecting the fence line. And the pinpoint is so fast you will dig faster than most. While they are getting out their pinpointers out you have already moved on. HH

Ok, here is my problem.

I have a hunt coming up in the fall, and I am torn between using the Compadre or my Vaquero with a 10X12 DD coil.

This is a field, no fence lines that I know of, and I am pretty good and fast at coin shooting with both.
My thinking is the frequency shift on the Vaq could be very helpful, but the larger coil could be even more so.

I have the 7" coil on my Compadre, but still I feel the bigger coil should be the one I use.

What to do....what to do...

......just see who else has a Compadre or detector with the same freq and stay away from them on the hunt start.......The frequencies on 2 same detectors are not exactely the same so you might have no problem...

Thanks guys, I'm looking to zero in on another aspect of our hobby, I notice some hunters use the Compadre at hunts. I know that crosstalk is an issue. But depth is not an issue because all targets in a competition hunt are not that deep. I'm looking for an edge for this type of hunt.

While I have experienced cross talk while doing this type of hunt, it's usually been fairly easy to move a few yard from the offending machine eliminating the problem. I generally use a Conquestador

Back in the 80's I won a competition speed hunt with a Garrett Freedom III and the Groundhog 7" coil. I finished the LAST of the 3 fields while the other competitors were in the FIRST of the 3 fields. How fast can you pinpoint? I think that's the key.

Well, I had an old girlfriend that could go from nice to b**ch in about 5 seconds.
I am not quite as fast as that...but close.

Ha! Well, after reading all your posts, I know you use the "eyespot" pinpointing I use::the eyes freezing on a spot on the ground where the detector beeped when the center of the coil passed over it. Back then, everyone was taking "all the time in the world" to push the pinpoint button, scan in a little circle, and then locate the "center" of the signal, then pop the item out. Heck, even my Freedom III had a pinpoint! But I never used it. The "eyespot" was immediate, for me, and I had it pinpointed the second, or at most, third sweep.
