compatibility of Sunray Pro Gold headphones (blast limiter feature) on Xterra

Does the blast limiter feature on the Sunray Pro Golds compatible on the Xterra 705? I have 10 hours max on these headphones and use this feature successfully on the Sov GT and worked perfectly. However I can not get this to work on the Xterra 705. I cranked up the volume to 30 on the xterra 705, adjusted the volume in my Sunray headphones and then swept over a quarter on the ground. Having the coil a couple of inches away it was loud so I flicked the blast limiter to the ON position and didn't change a thing. Am I overlooking something? If these do not work on this machine can someone recommend a pair ( that has a blast limiting feature ) that does work. Thank you - Jim

I also tried them on the AT Pro and the limiter function works just fine. I have a feeling the "blast limiting" feature does not work on these machines. I have read other users comments concerning the sunrays on the Xterra but that baffles me. How can you stand the loud shallow surface blasts? Sure you can turn down the volume on the headphones to a comfortable level... but I hope you realize you are losing the deeper targets.

Xterras have stereo I don't know if that affects them or not.

Thank you 7CW.

After 129 views I was confident someone on this forum would of recommended a pair that does work correctly with the limiter function. Oh well...

I use regular killer bs headphones. I like them. Never used any with a limiter.

I do thank you for your input. Much appreciated. The xterra has a volume system like the Sov GT. That volume control on the xterra is actually "target volume" and I am sure you are quite aware of this. I have a feeling there are some that do not fully understand this. Proportional audio: the sound produced by a distant target starts softly. As the hunter gets closer with their coil (to the target) the volume level increases rapidly until it reaches the maximum level that has been set.

Today I went out to play around with the 705 at a freshwater beach that the town (not my town lol) bulldozed. There was one target in particular that sounded extremely faint to me but a nice repeatable signal. I am thinking this thing has to be deep..... dig down into the sand and at six inches (I measured with the TRX pinpointer I was using) there was a penny! I was kind of disappointed that this coin was 6" deep and I could barely hear it. (running the 5x10 18.75khz coil) Sensitivity set at 28. Now my volume on the 705 is at max (30) and I keep the headphone volume to where a surface target isn't going to blow my ear drums out. See where I am going with this? Now if I could use my limiter switch, I could flick that thing ON, deadened the surface blasts from shallow targets and increase the volume in my headphones essentially increasing the target volume on deeper targets. I am going to give this machine more time out in the field as I am not giving up. However, if this is the "limit" in terms of what I can hear....

I just bought a pair of iFrogz EarPollution Billionaire DJ-Style Headphones for $11.25 including shipping to see how they work. List for $48.

Personally, I think that you're a bit optimistic about how deep that coil will see. Typically a 5x10" won't run much deeper than a 6" coil would.

Hi O.L.

I understand there is a depth limit to every coil. However I didn't realize I was going to struggle as much as I did hearing a coin at 6". My glass is half full with potential in what I have learned about this machine on this very forum. Can you recommend a pair of headphones that have a "limiter" feature that will work on the xterra? I need all the help I can get to hear the deeper targets with proportional audio. Thanks - Jim

Maybe it's just because I have damaged hearing to begin with, but I don't feel the need for a limiter with my setup. I just have my Threshold set to barely audible with the detector volume wide open, then adjust the volume on my phones to a comfortable level. I'm sorry that I can't be of much help with a recommendation.

Well, we are in the same boat as far as damaged hearing. I have tinnitus on top of my hearing loss so I can't tell if it is the ringing in my ears or a tone from the machine when I run a target over at depth. The weak proportional audio report I know I am missing items. Frustrating to live with but that is how it rolls for me. That is why I need all the help in the world when it comes to deep targets. - Jim
