compass sees through iron/ Old Calif/ Lawrenzo

For all of you Xl Pro people out there and I am one of you, I had a chance to hunt a place called Preston Castle. It was built in 1890. And it was a place where kids and teens that broke the law were sent to work off there crime.

Not a prison...anyway I had a connection to get into the grounds that are locked and the city police drive by the grounds to check for Vandals every hour. I had a free pass and hunted for six hours. I found so many great finds.

From Silver Dollars, Half Dollars, Quarters, Dimes, and Wheat's including three Steel Wheat's. I found Buttons and a Troy Bar of Silver, a 1927 Two Dollar Bill and a 1957 Silver Certificate One Dollar Bill. This was in a rusted tin. I found nickels from the 1940-1950 including a Buffalo.

I took my Fisher and Whites and they were going crazy from the iron in the ground so I took out the compass in auto ground bal and thought my last chance to live or die. And Bam it was hitting targets like there was no tomorrow. I just watched the meter and dug the good readings and came out with a lot of cool things.

I never really understood masking till I saw Nasa Tom's DVD. I read a lot about it and ran into a lot of hunts that made me and my other detectors go crazy.

This is the first time I had control and could cherry pick the good targets and then dig the foil targets. In relic hunting the junk targets are not pull tabs and foil but copper and iron and all sorts of cool stuff. So it is a different world when relic hunting.

I know the T2 is a great relic detector since Old Cal...Paul is an expert in relic hunting and has one and loves it. And I know there are other detectors that do a great job, I just couldn't believe how the compass would find iron and silver in the same hole. Or I would slow down and I could see the needle respond to the multy targets one by one. This is one fast machine

I love my fisher and White's for parks and schools and I am hoping that the T2 is the first of many new detector that are using what worked thirty years ago but advanced it to todays technology.

I broke my camera so I did't get photos of the castle grounds or my finds but I have a new camera coming and I will take photos to post in a few weeks.

Good job Lawrenzo,

You've been getting access to some good sites lately, those are very good finds there and it appears Compass does it again. Hunting a site like that would be a dream come true for many of us, Not too many of these sites left too.

For relic hunting, If it wasn't for the T-2, I would go back to using an MXT or Compass Scanner series detector. The Compass XL Pro you have is a serious relic detector and in most areas such as the Preston Castle you hunted depth is not an issue, Excellent separation from using the Compass scanner series such as yours.

My recent finds have come from Compass detectors and now the T-2 you sold me several months ago.... Like I said above, if it wasn't for the T-2, would still be using the older Compass detectors and then an MXT for depth at the older sites laced with iron.

You may want to reconsider going back to a T-2, Although the Compass 13.77 kHz XL Pro you have cut's through the iron masking it does not fare as well on depth as the T-2 does.

Give the T-2 another try Lawrenzo, We can get together and compare your Compass XL Pro against the T-2 and I'll show you the advantage the T-2 has over the Compass 13.77 kHz series.

WTG on the finds :)

I think the gold scanner I have coming will be a good test for us! I had it reworked by Keith in Texas he has had it for two months now and checked all of the inners. I really think that this should be the wave of future, machines masking and unmasking. I would like to do a test with the two machines. I had to use Rybo's machine the Xp Pro and it was really fast. I will send you some photos as soon as I get them. They are having a function at the castle the 10 of June and I will take some photos of the grounds of the castle.

I would really like to get together with you and meet Lodi Tom I hear there is this trip on June 10th camp high Seirra...this is from the forum

I wanted to have a new thread due to the fact that the other thread is 4 pages long. We have to make some logistical decisisons:

First, here is the list of the people that have expressed interest in the hunt, but have either not offically committed, or have sent me information:

As of today, we have 20 people confirmed, and another 20 pending.

Do we want to bring our own food, BYOF?

Or do we want to do a bbq, or potluck? We will have access to campfire pits, bbq pits, water, tables, and some benches.

This camp can hold 300 people, spead out of the hillside, but we should have enough room.

Also, elevation of this location is 5K feet. Take a couple of asprin when we get to Sonora, and drink a liter of water to prevent altitude sickness. (Yes, really!)

The terrain is not extream, however there are areas that are somewhat steep. Lots of stairs, but nothing to bad.

If you have medical issues that you're concerned about, let me know so we can be ready for worst case.

We have to decide if we want to stay the night. If we do, I have to make arrangements with the camp. They have a big dining hall, so we can eat in there, and use it for our finds. And cards, and music, and so forth....

Thoughts?
Steve
