Compass Detectors

I used to use them back in the 70s and early 80s. I had the Judge 1, Judge 2, Relic mag professional, the Relic Magnum 7, Relic Mag 6,and The coin Magnum. I still have a Judge 2 and a trade in 420 Magnum that sit on the wall. At one time they were one of the best around if not the best. I tried a few of the scanner series and did the field test of the Coin and Relic Scanner a few years back. I feel the newer Compasses are not as nice as many of the other detectors out there now.

I like the older Compass detectors! I presently own a 77B Pro, a 77B Auto, Coin Magnum, Judge 2 and a Relic Magnum 6. I really like the 77B Pro for Relic Hunting trashy iron sites! And a really mis- understood detector is the Coin Magnum! Goes deep but has limited Discrimination depth! Still good for deep coin and relic hunting!...................HH..............Joe

Last I heard they went out of bussiness so there is no web site i was told.

Steve Goss was the head engineer at Compass, he purchased the rights to the Compass name after the big fire that took the Compass factory down. Steve Goss did keep things going till around last year give or take, his service had been dropping off throughout the past few years. Steve Goss kept things sorta small out of his home kinda mom and pops from what I understand. Steve Goss did a lot of repair work and had few small dealers here in the states, that is all gone now. I believe Steve Goss wife Sue got cancer in the past few years and this may have had something to do with Compass finally going completely out of business along with other business difficulties.

From a personal stand point I had a very bad experience with Steve Goss and Compass a few years back with a new Compass detector that I ordered factory direct. I will not go into the details as it is a long painful story that still #*#**## me off, but I can tell you he was a very shady man and not as trust worthy as some might think out there. I came close to driving to Oregon and having a personal talk with him if you know what I mean.

I did some research and called around to his supposed dealers here in the USA at the time after my dealings with Compass and Steve Goss and most had quit dealing with him for similar reasons as my problems with him, plus a lack of warranty repairs on Compass part with there customers. Enough said for now about that.

In my opinion Steve Goss was bad news and if anyone else had started Compass back up after the big fire that destroyed the plant, they may have maid it and become a vital company again.

Compass maid one heck of a good product at one time and they will be missed by the many that owned and used them. A lot of good engineers came from Compass originally and went other places to work on some of the other great brand detectors we all have owned and enjoyed throughout the years.

Take Care All and HH,
Bill G

I use a Compass x 100 challenger now and again . Nice to swing and can on occasions locate good quality finds. I like the detector a lot its very good i would never sell it as they are very hard to find if i ever wanted another in years to come.

I was the main UK Compass dealer. That SCUMBALL Goss stole $7500 worth of machines from me and sold them to other people. These were machines I had returned for repair and thus belonged to OTHER people.

I am currently supplying evidence to the Washington County Sheriff. They are to be arrested for fraud and indicted soon. if anyone has ANYTHING the Sheriff could use please post it here or PM me with it.

Thanks

yeah!..i liked my judge#1 i had in '78!..it was my first detector and found me a ton of coins!..had a chat with mr.goss back in the middle eighties, and he explained that he was trying to hold the company together,as sales were slipping!..seemed like a decent straight forward guy to talk to,however i was not in a positon to physcologically evaluate him as our conversation was casual in nature.

first machine I owned was a compass,, that machine could find the silver,, course that was back in the 80;s when silver seemed to be everywhere,,

it WAS everywhere!..all you really needed was 4 to 5 " in depth to get it!..ahhh!..those were the days my friend!

Yep, Still use it. Bought it new at the Compass factory. I live 4 blocks away from the old Compass plant.

Man My compass didnt look a bit like that one,, had the analog meter,, and if that sucker moved just a tad past center to the right,, dig it,,

Hi. I had (still have) a Compass Judge ll in the '70's. I hated it at first. On automatic, it retuned itself so slow, it was worthless. One day, I found on manual, if I held down the push button in the handle for reset, the detector became a fast auto unit. I pulled the pushbutton out and replaced it with a toggle switch that was "down=full time fast auto, center=manual, up=momentary fast auto for manual reset." Really worked great. Maybe I'll take it out of moth balls and take out in the front yard. Ron.:wiggle:

There is a forum for all of you that don't know, dedicated to users of Compass detectors, it is not affiliated with the Compass company or Steve Goss.

Thanks lovepulltabs for the web site with the Compass X100. That was the last detector I had before I quit detecting in the 90's. I was trying to remember things about the X100 a few days ago and here you go and put up an excellent web site with all the info I needed. Greatly appreciated...Z

We would all like to find one.. I think the last one to come up on ebay pulled over 500.00 dollars, I can't remember the exact amount.. The X100 still pulls a premium as well..
