I have been given a compass coin magnum detector, could anyone tell me if its any good for gold detecting? also which is a good cheap detector under $1000,, if there is any

Do you mean "gold", as in gold jewelry? (rings, etc...)? If so, yes, that machine can find them. But that machine is over 30 yrs. old vintage, so today's machines will out-hunt it.

Or did you mean "gold" as in "nuggets"? If so, no, it would be a lousy nugget hunter. To get nuggets, you need a machine designed to find targets down to pin-head and flake size stuff, not a coin/relic machine.

The Compass was a good detector in its time. You can find coins with the Magnum but it just doesn't have the depth of the newer units.Another problem when you use your discriminate it doesn't ID targets well and even looses more depth. There are a lot of nice detectors for under 1000 dollars. My suggestion go visit a dealer.A couple good units you may be interested in Fisher CZ3D,Whites M6,Garrett 1500 there are a lot of good equipment too find for your price range.
