I love the silver. It packs a punch and easy to use! Hands down!

I have the Silver and love it. I wish someone who has both would give estimates on depth of both as detectorreviews.net has some post that say the Silver goes just as deep.

I've only had the Cibola and Vaquero. The Cibola was very easy to use and pinpointed like a lazer. It has good depth, too. Not quite as deep as my Vaquero, but that's not what you are asking. I've never used a Silver, but heard good things about it. Personally, I'd go with the Cibola.

Can't realty answer either I just have cibola , I would guess they might be similar. I just don't think both in all metal mode would be that different. But I dont know.

One neat fact for me on the cibola is I hardly ever use the pinpointed for pinpointing more for sizing, also a lot of the time the threshold is all the way up so this make the pinpoint useless.

I have not used the SIlver Umax, I have the Cibola and Deleon, The Cibola is a bit lighter in weight, deeper. Both are good detectors.

I bought a Silver Umax in the early spring. This was my first MD since I was a teen. I originally had a Heath kit back then. I have not MD since then and I am in my early 50's now. I got the bug again. My brother has always MD and he is using a Bounty Hunter that has to be 20 years old. When I first started using the Silver I was happy because I was finding all kinds of clad. Where I am located in Southeastern Pa. there is allot of trash. I was running the Silver in discriminate above tabs so I did not have to deal with the trash. All this time I was getting no Silver. A few wheat pennies but that was it. I kept thinking it was because the sites where worked over or I was losing depth because of discrimination. I also had allot of problems with falsing and sent it back to Tesoro. I spoke with Rusty and he said that they couldn't find anything wrong with the detector. He explained to me outside interference and upon checking it out that seemed to be why it was falsing.

My brother decided to invite me along on a trip with him. This was great because I figured I would show him up with my new detector. Bottom line was that he found the silver and a gold ring and I got clad and 2 wheat pennies. I did notice that he dug allot of trash as I did. I chalked it up to his experience and not the detector.

A few months pass and I did get a 1929 Silver quarter on a sight that had a house built in the 1800's. The odd thing was that I noticed that the coin was not that deep. 3" to 4" tops. This is when I started thinking that the Silver wasn't getting the deep coins. I persevered with it but always in the back of my mind I kept thinking I was not getting the depth. I tried to increase the sensitivity but it always became unstable.

I decided to air test the Silver and I was disappointed with the results

I was running in Disc mode at zinc and sensitivity at 6. I air tested a quarter @ 5 inches. At a sensitivity of 10 I was getting 5.5 inches. Most of the time at this sensitivity I was also unstable. Where I hunt it is mostly grass so I subtracted 1 to 2 inches and the best depth I was getting was 3.5 to 4.5 inches.

I read about the Vaquaro having great depth because of the ground balance. I decided that the only way I was going to prove that the Silver was not the best for depth was to put my money on the line and purchase a Vaquaro.

About 4:00pm on Sat. 9/17 Fedex home delivery shows up with my Vaquaro. I quickly put it together, read the quickstart instructions and went to work in my yard. I have lived at my residence for 38 years and my brother has MD my yard {1/2 acre} many times over those years. My first find with the Vaquaro happend to be a 1964 Silver Dime!!! In my own yard!!! I told my brother of this find and he said he purposely left it there for me to find. LOL. I went over a few small areas elsewhere that I originally went over with my Silver previously and happend to find more coins. No silver but a few wheat pennies. this proved to me that I was't getting the depth with the Silver that I had hoped for!

Air testing the V I get a solid 7" on a quarter with the disc @ max! Supertuned I am getting 8"! Also Supertuned I get 7.5" on a silver dime and 8" on a copper penny

I know this has nothing to do with the Cibolo but I am giving you my opinion on the Silver. The Cibolo has the same HOT circuitry as the Vaquaro. Except for the ground balance I think it is the same as the Vaquaro so in mild soil I think you would get better depth than the Silver. Just my opinion.

I have owned a Silver and a Cibola, and presently own a Vaquero. I loved the Silver and regret selling it. The stock 8 inch brown coil worked very well on coins and jewelry and if you added the 5.75" coil to the silver, it was awesome hunting in trashy areas.
The first day out with my Silver it found me a 10k class ring that had eluded me many times before on my local football field. If I could only have one detector, I would be very happy having the Silver

how is it that the same detector can have such different results ? is it the ground? or are not all detectors created equal ? i know there are so many variables in metal detecting and that it would be hard to say one thing over the other ? but ever drove a certain modal car and then drove another of same modal and thought one was great and one was junk?

my question is are there hot detectors and just drivable ones in the same modal ?

Well, it mostly has to do with the ground conditions. I did a test on my own using a Tracker IV, Silver umax, Ace 250, and a Compadre. Lots of folks were a little miffed when I found the Tracker was only good for about the first 2--3". The Ace and Silver umax were about equal, with the Ace being a bit noisier, and the Compadre kept up with them all. I'm sure to get more than 5-6" in my area I'm gonna have to inverst in a manual or auto g/b machine. I really can't see this happening as I do mostly schools, parks, tot lots and just don't have time for more serious stuff. You can practically see the iron rocks in some of my places.

I've owned both and the Cibola is much deeper. The Silver is still great, but if you have the funds, go with the Cibola. It's DEEEEEP!

Believe me-that one's in the back of my mind all the time. To me, it's like 3 detectors in one and I'm not so sure about the depth thing being important anymore.

One thing I've noticed is some detectors lose quite a bit of depth when the discrimination is set very high. I think this varies a bit from one machine to another so it's worth testing a bit with your own machine. Personally, I prefer to test (air or other wise) with little or no discrimination and the sensitivity set as high as possible without chatter. This setting and/or the all metal setting if your detector has one should give a pretty good idea of what the depth capability is. Tests in the soil will vary due to mineralization in different areas and it's common to lose a bit of depth in the ground versus an air test, but if the performance is truly poor with the settings I mentioned, I'd have the detector checked out.
