Comparison Test

Has anyone had the opportunity to run a comparison
test of the Sunray Stealth coil X-8 and the new
8 inch coil for the Explorer made by Minelab.

Jim I dont think so, its not available here in the US that I know of, and if its not soon then either some southern boys gotta do it or wait till spring when I get one

Hi Jim..Kellyco is advertising the Minelab
8 inch loop on their internet site for $149.99
with the lower rod....????

Jim,
I think if you call them they will tell you they expect them anyday now, but dont have them right now. I understand they will be here in the USA with in a couple of weeks.
I have the 8 inch Stealth coil by Sunray and love it.
Rick

I have just compared my 8" coils on various objects from a copper coin to beer can
and found the Minelab one detects 2" deeper
than the Sunray coil does,
all coils vary + & - in sensitivity so you really need more people to test theirs before any decision as to the best one could be made,
the Sunray coil is the lighter by 75 Grams
but the Minelab coils use twin RF screened
feeder cables so theres less signal loss.

Also being a Ham Radio operator..your statement
about the twin RF screened feeder cables was very interesting. thanks again..Jim

Are you sure it's that much? That's like the difference between the stock 10.5" coil and the 8" Sunray. If that is true, why ever use the 10.5" again except in totally clean open fields. I also understand that the Minelab coil correctly identifys depth readings where the Sunray will not. Have you been able to validate these claims also? If so, it would appear that the Minelab coil is indeed the better coil with only the extra weight being the drawback. If it's better than my Sunray coil (which I love), you can bet I will DEFINATELY be picking one up in the Spring! HH and HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone! George

Unless I figured wrong the 75 grams is about
3 ounces..So the Minelab Loop weighs 3 ounces more
than the Sunray Loop.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Jim

Something doesn't sound right. You say that's the same results as the sunray 8" compared the minelab 10.5", your right and I would expand to say it would be IDIOTIC to use the 10.5" over the minelab 8" if the depth results were identical considering the added 2"s of coverage is only a nominal gain. I would gladly give up those 2"s of coverage if it meant less joint damage(elbow, rist).
My guess is that minelab uses the same coil cable on both the 8" and the 10" so testing not done I would say the 10.5" minelab gets deeper than the 8" minelab. I just can't except the idea that minelab would send out an 8" and a 10" coil having the same depth capability.
I tried out the sunray 8" and the way it balances out the XS is incredible. I wonder if the minelab coil will still give the XS the same overall balance.
One thing is for sure, it's just a matter of time before the Sunray 8" and the Minelab 8" coils are tested for depth by enough hunters to know positively the facts, and my guess is the reports will be coming in sooner than later.

Jim, Minelab coils use the same burn proof PTFE insulated coax as used in UHF/SHF front ends and PA outputs.

George,
Iv'e compared the Minelab factory 10" coil to the Minelab 8" and the original is still the best for max depth, getting another 2" depth on smaller coins and up to 6" deeper on large objects like a beer can.
theres no actual calibration adjustment to compensate the depth gauge to a smaller coil so its only going to be correct on the factory 10" coils but I find it still works usefully on the smaller coils to estimate target depth.

Mitch,
I was compareing the Sunray 8" with the NEW Minelabe 8" coils. sorry if I confused you there
regards Rob.

Rob-I think I will look into the minelab coil..
thanks Jim k3ji

No problem Rob, I understood your post perfectly. I was responding to George's post where he pointed out that your depth comparison results between the Sunray 8" and the Minelab 8" coils was similar to other depth comparison results made between the Minelab 10.5" and the Sunray 8" coil. After adding it all up it appeared to mean that the Minelab 10.5" and the Minelab 8" coils had similar depth capibilities. You cleared it up quite well in your recent post to George, so all is well in the universe again Thanks

All I want is a 15"-18" WOT and a monster UFO shaped DD for my Explorer.
Thank You Santa
