Comparing Detectors

I found a BH Landstar online for 246.00. I also found a Tesoro Silver Umax online for 239.00. I am looking for a machine that will compliment my Quick silver.. Any advice would be appreciated.. Thank You:detecting:

If you are going to hunt wagon trails then I would suggest get another brand as you already have a Bounty Hunter. Then you have to decide if you want a metered or non-metered. Tesoro makes some fine detectors and the one you mentioned should serve you well or you may could find a mid-line used metered detector for about that much. Just be sure to research any detector you have in mind and remember what works for others may not be your cup of tea. If you have a detector club within reasonable distance then go and see what others have and you may be able to use for a few minutes theirs and see if you like any of them.

I cannot really comment as I am biased towards the Land Star...
I have heard nothing but good reports on the Tesoro though...It will probably have a depth advantage on the BH machine. other than that, I would have a hard time deciding between them...The Land Star can be had used cheaper than that though if you look hard enough. I would not pay more than $225 for a used Land Star.

Hay Cherokeefan68,

Your name is long and my memory is short.
Have I talked to you before? your handle is familiar.

I am a Tesoro user, but I haunt the BH forum. I've used
them in the past. I finally switched to Tesoro. I have a
Silver Sabre uMax which is similar to the Silver uMax.
I also have a Euro Sabre and a Compadre.

The Euro Sabre is a very good unit with great capabilities.
Not made any more. Every time one comes up for sale
on eBay, they bid it up over $300. This unit has great
ground handling capabilities. One ED-180 on this unit is
one of the best discriminators on the market. It takes a
little more fooling with, but it is an outstanding unit. This
unit can do it all.

The Silver uMax is currently made and you know some-
thing about it. It is my second choice for hunting. This unit
is a park hound. It can ignore small iron while still retaining
it's full depth. It's ED-120 discriminator does not go into
the iron part of the discriminating scale and only responds
to iron larger than a coin. And then not always. This makes
the Silver a cherry picker. It is also a pretty good relic machine.

The Compadre is Tesoro's lowest priced unit. My personal
favorite is the Compadre. This unit does not have the depth of
the Silver and the Euro, but this unit has the best discriminator
in the industry. In my opinion, there is no unit that can handle
trash like this unit. I can pluck targets right off the side or top
of a steel reinforced concrete slab. I can pluck a coin 1/2' inch
from a 4" steel post. I can not put this unit down.

Bounty Hunters are really good coin shooters. Not as good on nickles.
The low operating kHz and wiring are not as responsive to low
conductive targets like gold. That is the reason I went to Tesoro.
BH'es find larger gold OK, but they do not respond to small gold
well. I have not used the higher priced BH's. They may be different.
But then you double the price of the Silver to gain bells and whistles.
I love simplicity and bare bones performance. The Silver and Compadre
In my opinion is metal detecting bliss.:inlove:
