Comparing coils...

For those that have used both...Is the 10 inch Tornado coil which comes as original equipment on the Elite an improvement over the BBS1000 of previous models..I know its lighter and sleeker but reading this in an ad makes me wonder...DEPTH- The "Tornado" coil system is Slimline, indestructible and waterproof. (The Tornado coil has its own on-board transmit circuitry which adds power and depth) to this incredible detector.Actually wonder about the on board circuitry myself.

Again your on the ball as I received several E-mails....My deceased Dad always said don't believe everything you read and only half of what you see so indeed his wisdom was surely a truism....

Would not want anyone forking out money for a Tornado coil because of the special non-existent transmit circuitry that boosts power and depth.

Shame on Minelab's advertising clowns.

Now if they had said that there is a recieve preamp built into the coil to boost recieved signals and help overcome cable loss, cross talk, and noise pickup before signal processing in the control box........that would have been O.K.

More impressive with the transmit power fable, I guess.

The Minelab ad actually reads:

"The Tornado coil has its own on-board circuitry adding power and depth to this outstanding detector."

Check it out here ....

The 10" Tornado is my favorite coil, more better than my Coiltek 15" WOT and my 8" Coinsearch. But then I am a beach hunter, and I like hunting a small beach where lots of people hang out. I need good coverage and good separation, and the 10" does the job for me. The WOT is great for covering a large beach, the 8" works best where there is a lot of trash (bottle caps, etc.)
Just my very humble opinion.

Good Hunting!

Specifically says "transmit".

Like to see them explain how this can work with the ONLY source of power to the coil is the transmit signal.
No possible power gain without an additional power source to operate it.

You mention coils....
T-10 is pretty good general purpose coil...use it quite a bit. I use the BBS 800 when noise and trash are a bit of a problem. Sometimes use the S-12 under the same conditions.....depends on how I feel about it. Use the 12.5 Detech when noise and trash are not too bad...blows the others away.

blowing the others away. I only beach hunt and use wot coil and backup is 12" Intruder coil. What did you notice between the Intruder and the Detech coil?? Thanks for any responce. Walter

How well the Detech will work in comparison could have a great deal to do with the dirt. It certainly has a great deal to do with trash and noise.

The Detech does not like trash and noise. The S-12 is surprisingly good in these areas for depth and target seperation.

In clean and quiet areas the detech easily beats the S-12 (in my dirt). You have to watch the sensitivity setting though.
There is a max setting for best performance that can be very sharp and clearly defined, particularly in dry dirt. Even if conditions allow settings higher than the 11 or 12 o'clock peak (depending if it's on the 2a or the GT), the depth will drop off quickly and the target response will sound bad. I think this happens because the ground noise being picked up chokes the Sov to death and renders it unable to clearly pick out the target signals.

Another thing about it....Gives solid hits a lot like the Minelab coils. It either hits or misses, while the S-12 is more prone to threshold jumps without target audio on weak targets.
If I am getting a little noise and the threshold bounces around a little I can ignore this with the Detech, but will wear me out checking out all the spots where the threshold jumped with the S-12.

Another odd thing....
Let's say you can only run sensitivity up to 12 o'clock with another coil before you start having trouble. You will have to set the Detech about 3 hours lower to get the same stability. At this point I don't think there is much if any advantage to the Detech. Works best when conditions allow the higher settings that I mentioned earlier.

You love them or hate them.

At least without takeing some of these things into consideration.

If it's a place that it likes, then it's good. Otherwise it sucks.
I used a 14" for a couple years until it crapped out. It was more extreme than the 12.5. Never get another one of those overly hot arm breakers again.

These are very distinctly "specialty" coils, and are not good for general purpose.

They call them Excelerators here amd I think they are called Penetrators in Europe. Detech is easier to spell.

Kellyco is the only outlet here in the states as far as I know. Don't expect them to be as fantastic as advertised.

Unless you know your detector and your hunting areas very well, you would be well advised to steer clear. They have a tendency to be too hot and difficult to use. Eat batteries faster too.

hi walt,
i to use a 15" wot on my sov , i mount the control box high up the shaft behind the arm cup and find it good to use , il have to make a stand for it as it sits the control box onto the sand when digging !!! not a good idea . tony weston

i dont know about that walter. i had the Wot and it was a great coil but after about an hour of swing it and changing hand alot i found it to be real heavy. i now use the sunray 12 and its seem to do just as good a job plus its feels so much lighter and i can get the sens. up higher and stable. i dont hip mount cause i like to be alittle more free of cables .

real good depth and pinpoints well.I can set sensitivity on Wot or S12 at 12:00 and get smooth running and max. depth until I hit the red or black sand so i will turn it back to 1:00 or less for smooth operation and max. depth. I just feel at the salt water beach the Wot has the edge with Depth and Coverage, and you will have trouble swinging the Wot unless you Chestmount and use a Straight shaft because it is heavier than the S12.If you are not using a straight shaft you owe it to yourself to buy one. What a Difference! After 2or 3 hours I start hurting also.Take care and Good Luck! Walter

thats funny , i keep a box of freezer bags and rubber bands and rags in my detecting bag. dont mind the mud on my hands to much but hate it on the detector.
