OK, help me decide. I already have a Silver umax-and I like it. I, however, am impressed about all the rave concerning the Compadre. I also have the Ace 250. Now my understanding is the Silver is deeper than the Ace-but in tough conditions the Compadre outshines them both because of the auto-tune and frequency difference, as well as the 180 disc. And Monte seems to hate the round coil on the Silver. Do I just get a 5.75 coil for the Silver and keep it or opt for the Compadre? Is there REALLY that much difference?

I would think there is value in using one 'main' machine, and perhaps swapping coils as the need arises.
You would learn more how that main machine 'talks.'

Backup machines are also a good thing. Cost of a Compadre is not much more than a coil and lower leg.

The Little Yeller Feller has some good features, and they are fun, but are not as responsive as Tesoro machines.

Your choice should be influenced by your location, and type of hunting you have planned.

It may be wise for you to step UP to a machine with GB capability.

I have never had or used a Compadre but I don't see how it could do anything more than a Silver uMax. Myself I really like the round brown stock coil for the Silver uMax. I had a 4" coil for my Silver uMax and it was too small and not very deep, the stock coil does fine even in trashy areas. Not to disagree with anyone's opinion here but remember what works for one person might not work for someone else. It took me a long time and lost alot of of money to finally realize that you don't always go by what a couple of people say, such as I just got a XYZ detector and it does this and that, another person jumps in and agrees, well I have to try one and end up not liking it at all and sell/trade it & loose a bunch of money on the deal. If it aint broke don't fix it. Steve.

Hi Slingshot,

I have a Compadre and a Silver Sabre uMax plus a Vaquero and a Euro Sabre.

Each one of my machines will do things that the others will can not do.

That being said, the difference may not be that noticeable to a less experienced user.

As was mentioned, it depends a lot on your type and style of hunting.

I like the 8" stock coil. Great depth. Good separation. But not as light as the 5.75,
and a little larger foot print. I like using the 7" coil on my Silver.

Here's my opinion, and you know what they say about those.....lol

Compadre: True ED 180. Best discriminator. A tot lot mean machine:veryangry:
<><><><><>Will hunt close to large metal objects. Will cut through tough ground
<><><><><>Will pick up tiny gold chains.

Draw Backs: Doesn't have threshold based all metal. Not as deep as the others
<><><><><>under good ground conditions.( not so in bad conditions ).

Silver Sabre: Naturally rejects small iron with out loosing depth. Can find jewelry
<><><><><>and coins fast. Great cherry picker. Can work in places with lots
<><><><><>lots of trash, and iron trash especially.

Draw Backs: No ground balance. Can loose depth under some ground conditions
<><><><><>as compared to the other three. ED 120 has trouble detecting tiny
<><><><><>gold chains.

Vaquero: This machine has trouble with tiny gold because it's not a true ED 180.
<><><><>But if tuned hot, it gets more sensitive. The all metal will do very well
<><><><>with tiny gold. Manual GB and VCO all metal make the V a powerful
<><><><>and versatile machine.

Eldorado: True ED180. This is a real good all around machine. It is on a level with
<><><><> the Vaquero. There are definite differences between the V and the Euro,
<><><><> but that is too involved to go into now. It would be a long post by it self.

I think a Compadre is a good choice. I think everyone should have one or two.

It may be time for you to go to a machine with Manual GB and more features than
the Silver.

But that depends on you. The Silver is a great machine. Many prefer it over machines
costing much more. It has a lot to offer.

Now that I have you totally confused:blink:, Hope it all works out well.

What I do is just stay with Tesoro because they have never disappointed me.

HH,

as stated by someone else here, and i agree!..this detector is very underrated!..no wonder gifford has kept it in the line for so many years!..for what it is designed to do,it does it as well as detectors costing much more, and continues to demonstrate that a 'ton" of money is NOT required to own a "crackerjack" metal detector!

if i am not mistaken, the silver was one of gifford's early designs, when he started the company, and also along with the "cutlass" was a first u-max design as well!

not necessarily!..granted in the "right" situation (g.b) has it's advantages, however if your ground is "light to "medium" in ground minerals then you don't need (g.b) as the loss in depth is negligible or non-existant!..also consider all the detectors sold over the years with a (pre-set) (g.b.) from the factory!..if these detectors DID NOT find .their share of goodies, then they would have stopped building them years ago!

I have to agree. I'll be the first to admit in some conditions and for full versatility a manual ground balance machine is great. However, having and using one, Plus having and using several preset machines I feel that too often on the forums the preset machines get played down more than they deserve. I've made many good finds with my Silver Sabre umax in some ground that's not ideal and in moderate ground it's been great. Have also had some experience with a couple of competitors preset machines that work pretty darn well in average ground also. This doesn't mean I'm putting down manual (or true auto) ground balance, just pointing out that a preset machine shouldn't necessarily be considered a poor choice as they can be very effective detectors for a good deal of detecting.
My two bits,

i concur, and have been using pre-set detectors for years myself here in new england with much success!..low to medium mineralization is the "norm" around here!

I ordered a Compadre and it should be here today. I opted to buy it instead of a 5.75" coil for my Vaquero. Years ago I had an Amigo, that I let my little boy use, (he's 22 now), it was a good machine.
