Compadre

Just got a new Compadre with 8" coil recently. Tried it out in the yard and the detector is very chirpy like the sensitivity is set too high. I hate to send a new detector back to Tesoro. Just wondering if turning the sense down a little might quieten it down? Anyone get a super sensitive Compadre new out of the box? Just holding it up in the air away from any metal sources, it's still chirping away. Thanks for any help.

I cannot use my compadre anywhere near my house, too much interference. But it works great everywhere else. Take it out and give it a real try.

Thanks Walnut. Will try it in the park and see how it works. My old 5.75 Compadre worked fine at the house though.

I thought you already had a Compadre? ANY detector that relies a whole bunch on internal settings and/or lacks sufficient external control for a savvy operator, is very likely to run across interference or challenging ground environments often enough to cause the user some frustrations. That's why I personally favor a model with ample adjustment features. Not an excess amount of tweaking this and that, just the basics that can make it a more versatile, yet simple to use, detector.

The "chirpy" behavior could be caused by:

• EMI from a nearby source.
• Sensitivity that is set too high.
• An improper Ground Balance, especially if too negative for the ground mineral conditions.
• A defective detector.
• A defective, out-of-spec, search coil.
• Any combination of the above.

That's what the warranty is for.

Reducing the Sens. (Sensitivity) might help quiet (or a British term of quieten) the noise, but only where you are. Reducing it now could mean you don't have enough Sensitivity should you move to a different location that lacks EMI, which is one of the weaknesses of models like the overly-simple Compadre.

Yes, I had one or two come through back when I was a Tesoro Dealer and they came with the 7" Concentric coil, and I also had some wimpier specimens as well.

It still could be any of the problems listed, but EMI would be #1 and a too-high Sensitivity setting would be the 2nd thing to address.

I did. Gave it to a family member that wanted to detect. Bought a new one to replace that one. EMI could be it but my old Compadre, my Sidewinder Micromax, Cibola and Tigershark all did fine in my yard. Found some good stuff in my yard.

I hope they upgrade the compadre with a GB and sensitivity, and connector to change coils . thats why i got rid of mine or at least why i don't want to get another ,

last chirpy I had was a coil issue. which they wouldn't fix cost me 90 bucks for nothing think they could have tossed in a hat or something?

I just bought a Compadre also (hav'nt received it yet). I have read that if the user is wearing jewelry like a ring or a watch, that this can cause false positives. I assume this is a result of the machines sensitivity. Bill in South Jersey.

also think about your shoes and cell phones. Shoes can cause problems with steel in the arch as well as in the toes. Cell phones can affect some signals.

Rings and watches, etc., are metal objects you should remove when doing a 'Bench Test' or 'Air Test' so you're not moving unwanted metal objects in the search coil's electromagnetic field. You also have to use caution if you sweep the search coil close to any metal object, such as eyelets, steel toes or other metal in shoes/boots.

You can also have some interference from various electrical/electronic power sources, such as wires, transformers, cell phones, etc.

Mine was that way inside the house. I also didn't like the extra sensitivity on teeny objects that would cause it to chirp. I turned my sensitivity pot clockwise a teeny amount and I enjoy the "new" quietness of awaiting a viable signal. Oh, it still hits (at lower disc levels) on the teeny objects- it's just they're more discernible. I didn't worry about the warranty-for $150- so I did it myself. But, as Monte said, that's what the warranty's for.
I don't know if all the posts and concerns about some posters wanting more depth, etc. caused the factory to turn them up or their emi levels there aren't as bad.
Might also add I'm one of the Tesoro horror stories and only use one because I had a fabulous dealer who helped and later realized that the Compadre-in a working state-is worth keeping-my bread and butter machine.

just take the cover off and turn down the sensitivity the switch is there just no knob, mine I wanted it more powerful so held the machine staight out horizontal to the ground at about 4' and turned up the sens till it just started to chirp then turned back about an 1/8th and its amazing.

There's no switch! There are three pots and only one of them is the sens. pot. It's the top pot- not one of the two bottom ones- and you GENTLY turn it Clockwise to lower the sensitivity. And just a wee amount. And if you feel the least uncomfortable doing it- send it in!
Forgot to add- it takes a teeny screwdriver- and a plastic TV service adjusting tool is preferred.

Slingshot there's NO SWITCH !!!! oh wait that's right I keep forgetting I'm Polish and us Pole's always have it backwards.

ah ha ha,, no you don't even know the half of it,,, if the instructions you posted above are accurate I think I turned mine in the wrong direction also.

wife says only I can mess up a metal detector that has 1 knob, she's Greek for gods sake and she's even laughing at me now.

It should have gotten noisier if you did. I hope it was the top trimmer, also. (on newer models.) I turned mine to the right just a teeny, if I remember correctly-it's been a year.

KK1, mine got really chatty eariler this year. I assumed it was due to all of the rain we had, which amplified the minerals in the ground. Finally seems to have dried out but have not yet had a chance to get it back out, due to Daughters upcomming Wedding and a few other things. Will try it out in another couple of weeks or so and see what happens. Hope you get it all sorted out. HH.
