Compadre - Why Buy Anything Else?

If I can find everything with my Compadre (coins, jewelry, relics) why spend more for any other detector (including any other Tesoro)?

Been asking myself the same question for quite some time. The Compadre is one of a kind.

You may need something that goes deeper in some places, but beyond that....

Depth is the ONLY reason I can think of or possibly a display like on the Cortes or Deleon.

Yes it lacks in the depth department but maybe with the new 8" coil model that to will change.Who knows.

One of you need to buy a Compadre with a 8 inch coil and test it, so I'll know if should order one or not.:)

Yep, Tabman is right..... One of you guys order on tonight and get us some air test data!!! I'm thinking maybe I want one.

Here are three reasons which can be found on other Tesoros. 1. Easy coil changes 2. manual ground balance 3. external sensitivity control. However, don't get the impression that I don't like the Compadre, because I do. In fact, I had one of the earlier 7" coil models, sold it, missed it, and bought another. A Compadre is an excellent detector for the niche it fills and I'll keep one in my arsenal.

So you're saying that Tesoros with manual ground balance and sensitivity controls are probably superior to the Compadre?

In some conditions, yes.

I don't have the time to waste crawling along with an 8" coil. I swing a 15x12 SEF Butterfly or a cleansweep coil. While this is a bit extreme, I don't see myself using concentric coils except in trash.

To each his own, but concentrics are not as good in trash as the DD/widescans size for size which is what your swinging so your response puzzles me.

Bill, you are probably right. I forgot that they make a 5.75 DD, which I don't yet own.

Topdecker, do you find swinging those large coils to be tiresome after several hours? I'm 71 and definitely prefer light detector/coil combinations if I'm going to be swinging all after noon.

I bought the compadre first and still use it as much or more than my other detectors. I am a tinkerer and have added a coil connector to mine, so I can use my Outlaw coils. I will try to do an airtest with all the coils I have. I have the Outlaw coils and a clean sweep coil. I really like the Compadre clean sweep combo, but I havent done any comparison tests yet.

Machineman, when you do that air test, please if you can do a penny, nickel, dime, and Quarter. I would love to see the results with the different coils! You would be the forum HERO for doing this one!

I will do so. I will also test various gold and silver. I can setup my outlaw and test it at the same time to compare. Air tests aren't the best judge of a detector but they are fun and somewhat informative.

I bought two Compadres, one for each one of my sons. I was tickled to see that my 7 year old quickly found some jewelry at a tot lot with it. He still has that little silver pin in his treasure box (where he keeps his allowance/toothfairy,/birthday money).

Me, I use the Compadre to clean up a place before I hit it with the Deus. To say that I am extremely impressed with it is an understatement. I cannot tell you the number of times I have found a rusted iron nail in the hole with a keeper. I will surely keep an eye out for the 8'' coil model.

Heck yes it is tiresome! Since I am flagging targets, I often start wishing that my supply of flags would run out so I can put the detector down and start digging.

I'm 51 and can use it for 3-4 hours before I _have_ to put it down for the remainder of the day. I only use that big coil when the trash and target levels are pretty low - areas where you do 20 square yards and get 3 to 5 targets tops. Right now I am searching a spot that has produced 4 pieces of silver, but it might go 10 minutes before you hit a target of any kind. I use more common coil sizes in typical conditions and greatly appreciate their reduced weight :)
