Compadre tweaks

After stewing on it a while, I finally opened up the older Compadre with 7 inch coil and tweaked the ground balance and sensitivity. Frankly, I didn't see an improvement in the test garden. It wouldn't sound off on a 6 inch dime before tweaks,, and it still won't. I noticed the sensitivity was within an eight turn from being maxed out to begin with. To confirm I was going the correct way, I turned it the other way until it wouldn't see the 4 inch dime either.

As for the ground balance, I was applying the "power balance" principal. I raised the discrimination just above all metal to where you hear the slightest chirp in the threshold audio, which I believe indicate the change from all metal to discrim mode. In my ground it was a little positive to begin with, and is slightly negative now. I'm gonna leave it there and hunt with it an see if I notice anything different.

I marked it real well, and will be able to return it to where it was, no problem.

Took it out for an hour after work to a "hunted out park". It was slightly chippy. With the Jolly Rogers and the tweaks, I did feel like the pull tabs sounded more raspy. Sadly I didn't swing over hardly anything good to compare signals too. I'm gonna leave it be for now and see what happens. I did however dig up this hypodermic point. Luckily I saw a glint of "silver" before I plunged my paw into the hole.

Keep that needle in your pouch. Show it to someone who complains about detecting in the parks, on the beach, or anywhere else. You know, those few.

I would encourage anyone tweaking the Compadre to mark the factory setting! I didn't notice that much difference either and I struggled to get it back and finally set it positive and backed off from there to smooth out the audio. The only tweaking I would recommend is sensitivity if not satisfied. I actually LOWERED mine to just below chirping as I really enjoyed the quietness until over a target. I really didn't notice that much depth loss. And use a plastic TV tuner and gently turn.

Agreed,, that little potentiometer is pretty small and requires a light touch. Though I did clearly feel it's stopping point.

I hunted with it again today for a bit. No real difference to speak of. It's kinda funny, you see lots of posts talking about doing the tweaking, but you really don't read much about the performance afterwards. I may go back and turn the sensitivity down a bit and try that too. I will probably go back and return everything to where it was originally when it's all said and done. But I had to at least try it.

Worth a try if you're comfortable playing around in there. :) look forward to hearing the results!!
