Compadre & Sta Tabs

Went out with the Compadre for a couple of hours to my local trashy park. I tell ya,,,, I'm getting quite a collection of sta tabs. Yesterday I thought I had them figured out and mentally tried to "call them" before digging,,, nope,,, had just enough zinc cents show up to let me know I still had a ways to go yet. In thinking on it last night, I think maybe I need to use better headphones with the Compadre. I've been using a cheap set of Garrett's, because they are light. But maybe the Jolly Rogers will be more revealing?

Also, will EMI make target discriminate higher? I was close to a powerline most of the time and it seemed like targets were dropping off a little higher than they have been for other fields I've hunted. I had several tabs that were almost full discrimination signals.

I personally use killer bees.
I mean they're definitely better audio but I can't say whether to solve a problem.
The issue is the different types of tabs that are out there between beavertails what I call Round holes square holes or solids which are older ones that didn't have the top hole where you grab with your finger on the can they all discriminate a little bit differently and sometimes the no whole ones can go pretty high on the disc. Unfortunately with the Compadres since you don't have an threshold based all metal it's not immediately noticeable if EMI is affecting your detector. The way I know is I get a wobbling in the threshold when I'm in all metal but with a Compadre the only have disc so besides it erratically falsing from really strong EMI, there's no real easy way to know if EMI is a factor.

But don't feel bad if pull-tabs were easy to not dig then nobody would dig them but everybody still has issues with them. Some have found some workarounds but all in all pull tabs or just nature of the beast when you're detecting, especially when you're looking for gold. The more time you spend with it the more comfortable you get with the compadre and you'll probably start to dig less of them but I highly doubt you'll stop digging them at all unless you want to miss good targets. They just happen to fall in the same area that all the good targets do.

In reality, there are about 3 common statabs and they fall in the nickel, tab, and zinc penny ID's! I thought my visual ID detector had them figured out until I found 2 gold rings and several nickels "just because they sounded different!" Welcome to the real world! We haven't come far in 30+ years!
Almost forgot ! By hunting with my Compadre in usual sites, it stays pretty litter free, and after a while they are pleasant to hunt.

Yep, I forgot to add that it was falsing every time I'd bump into the slightest item. Every one of those spiny sweet gum balls would make it false,, and there were a ton of them. In my mind I decided it was the residential power lines that were close by,,, and the park has a network of underground wiring for Christmas displays. But the park is old, and close to home,, so I keep trying it,,, telling myself that the next signal might be something cool

Yep,, I was thinking that maybe this weekend when I clean the truck out I'd lay out about 25 dug tabs and mix in some coins, and see if there is anything my ears can detect,, and use a couple of headphone to see which I prefer.

If nothing else, I reckon I can fill up a gallon jug with tabs and recycle.

I forgot when they posted it but somebody on the Forum had posted a picture of all the tabs that they dug and other trash they had to dig before they found gold ring and it was quite a big pile of it

Yeah- and there was a forum moderator who had an intriguing avatar showing rings, coins, gold just visible beneath a pile of tabs.
