Compadre settings

What setting do you folks use on the Compadre? I was wondering since I fight with large numbers of tabs and iron nails. At just below 5 cents most of the targets are tabs, but with a nickel from time to time. I've been going over the yard trash collecting with the idea it should unmask better targets over time. I would be interested in what some of the you folks are trying in similar situations.

JMC,

If you set your control to just below nickels, you are knocking out all gold rings except for heavy ones. Don't know if that matters to you or not.

With the knob just above iron, rusty nails and most bottlecaps should give you an easily identifiable scratchy sound. That setting is where I do most of my hunting.

If there is too much non-ferrous trash, I may dial it up to just below nickel.

If I am looking for thin gold chains, I hunt in all metal and accept every target because sometimes very small or thin gold can give a false iron reading.

Just know that every Compadre can be set slightly differently at the factory, so your settings may vary slightly from what I described above.

I run mine just past the A in all metal ad check to just left of foil,

I dig it.

I always run pointing at the n in iron. After much air testing that setting never rejected one of mygold test items. You just have to dig tabs sometimes.

With me I tend to start out about half way between all metal and iron. If it seems the area is loaded with lots of nails, etc.....then I will bump it up a little to minimize these types of finds, unless that is what I am looking for. There are times I will set it at 5 cent mark if I am just out coin shooting. I guess it just depends on what I feel like looking for, how much time I have, and what I feel like/and how much digging I want to do for that day.

The maximum that I set the discrimination on the Compadre and other Tesoro detectors is just below where foil caps start to break up when I'm looking for extra small gold rings. Each detector is slightly different on the discrimination dial. It's best to do your own testing to see what works best for you. Always use the lowest discrimination setting that you can tolerate at a particular site. I always set the discrimination really low to start off with and dig around a dozen or so targets to see what I'm up against before deciding where to set and leave the discrimination.
